    Pros

    Great environment - good coworkers.

    Cons

Limited advancement - the department I was really interested in never had an employee leave, so they never needed to hire anybody else!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It's the modern American Riches-to-Rags fairy tale. Have a grand dream, acquire dozens of healthy companies and their good products. Cut costs to satisfy your greedy investors by cheapening your operations and sending the assembly to China and services to your Ireland-based tax shelter. Naturally this incites recalls of your biggest anchor products, which can only be overcome by killing off the acquisitions, laying off the bright and hard-working people that once made them great, and further cheapening your operating expenses to useless levels all so the higher ups get their golden parachutes and investors get their boats. Meanwhile, the futures of perfectly good diagnostic technology is trapped by patents, and patient health suffers.

    Hoorah, capitalism.

    Cons

Many employees work from home, which is a nice perk in today's otherwise high-traffic, low family time society.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Turn back the clock two years, tell Ron to smoke some weed and lay off the acquisitions frenzy until his own house is in order. And learn from the hundreds of other corporate disasters before you, that have proven cheapening your product results in neither steady gains nor good customer relationships.

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I switched job fields and the hiring manager took a chance on me. Alere is a great place to learn but too unstable to consider for a long term career. I'm convinced I'd like to stay in the healthcare IT industry. I've worked with many fantastic people - both co-workers and customers.

    Cons

Workload is heavy, training is lacking, turnover is high among all levels of employees. I've had 4 bosses in less than 2 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show more respect and appreciation to the workers. The frequent scolding don't inspire greatness in the workers.

    Cons

Early/late hours for 24/7 customer support. High employee turn over. No existant managment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Money and incentive is better than most companies in the same field. Flexibility in schedule is nice.

    Cons

Not really any room for growth. No ability to self-manage, constantly being monitored.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees to get the work done, allow for more opportunities for growth.

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good learning experience
    Good co-workers
    Good Pay
    Good middle management
    Descent Accrual of PTO
    Somewhat descent work-from-home opportunities

    Cons

Seems to be an increasing "Need" to perform head-count reduction
    Lack of training opportunities
    Lack of career path enhancement
Upper management claims to want to be proactive but never seems to get out of reactive mode
As with most companies the problem is rarely with folks at the lower levels... they do their jobs and get things done, it seems to be that the problems stem from the top several tiers where most of the money is earned and people are rewarded even though the decisions they make are not benefitting the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start performing your RIFs from the top down. Leave the seasoned employees, who are doing their jobs, alone and promote from within.
