I have been working at Alere full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Compensation, Benefits, Challenges, Empowerment, making a difference

    Cons

Change and uncertainty, but only if you can't handle it (change is good, we are told)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear company direction, One Alere is a good start but a long way to go, 2 priorities are Shareholders and Customer / Patient.......but who makes this happen? your employees of course.
HR and Engineering has been imported through nepotism in San Diego, jobs for the boys, but how can this be justified? can green cards be bought??

Former Employee - RN Complex Care Manager

I worked at Alere full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The complex case management model is effective and makes a difference in patient outcomes. Very flexible work environment.

    Cons

Isolation in a remote work environment is a big concern. My CM team leaders did not promote collaboration amongst team members to increase moral. Benefit options decreased and are very expensive. Salary range is at the very low end of industry standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward the loyal high performers. Acknowledge staff when they receive positive feedback from clients and patients.

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Have a lot of autonomy. No one looking over my shoulder. Really good products.

    Cons

Always waiting for a lay off. No R&D leadership which has resulted in no organic growth. Very little experience in R&D. Operations does not look past today. Ops is very reactive without any plan for even the near future like next month.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get into some detail and replace the less competent with management that know their subjects or have experience. Too many leading that don't know how to lead.

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Friendly work environment. No Dress Code. Hands on Training. Education Reimbursement. Higher starting salary than average salary in the area. Excellent growth potential. Superiors really care about subordinates.

    Cons

The company has acquired hundreds of smaller companies within the last few years so a lot of people through out the business partners still operate like a small business. They are resistant to change. They prefer to operate like a separate business unit with their way of doing things instead of working as one company with other business partners. Health benefits are not very competitive.

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Benefits and salary were good. My department and new supervisor and very supportive and work as a team. The job is good at first but there is not much growth within the company unless you want to move into marketing or finance.

    Cons

We have had bad management in the past and HR doesn't help to try to make things better. The job is draining because we talk to customers all day. The nature of the calls are also tiring. You will need a good amount of patience to get through the day.

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work/life balance - although one may need to work 50 hours a week, Senior management want to help you provide time with your family
    Growth - company/personal

    Cons

Quality of products - although that is improving
Expect change, both in how the company is organized as well as what the focus is on (i.e., products, services, etc)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better forecast to shareholders to help achieve sales

Former Employee - Document Control Specialist in San Diego, CA
Former Employee - Document Control Specialist in San Diego, CA

I worked at Alere as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The people at Alere were very friendly and knowledgeable about their work. Work atmosphere was laid back, could wear sweats everyday if one wanted to, and pay was reasonable for work. Alere is also very health focused, always offering lunch-time activities from soccer and yoga to basketball and boot camps.

    Cons

High turnover and at times upper management couldn't decided what they wanted to do; at times information changed daily.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to work out an effective time rather then doing it spur of the moment and constantly changing it, thus wasting peoples time and efforts.

Current Employee - Senior Finance Manager in San Diego, CA

I have been working at Alere full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

the money, flexibility in schedule; working with the most senior executive on important initiatives; making an impact in the direction healthcare will likely go.

    Cons

professionals should be allowed to run with it a bit more; too many puffed up VPs who blather on and on; too many moves of staff that seem to be designed to provide ways to exit people; not enough feedback to people about how they are faring in the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your strategic thinkers; not everything can be known with certainty, the sales flash is a guess and a waste of time.
