Director and Sr Directors not very smart

RDIS Manager (Former Employee) Irvine, CA

ProsGreat location and also, very good place to be if you want to not do much and play it safe. This is the place where every person that has no ambition should love.

ConsMy senior Director actually told me to come down a level or two. This is an actual quote. He actually thought I was doing too good a job. I suspect I was making him look stupid in meetings too.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are some good seeds at the Sr Director level. Do not let them get spoiled by the not very smart. It is too bad actually

    Stressful... very much so

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Prosgreat people to work with, most feel the same way so they are great people to vent to and to let them vent to you.

ConsO my, where to start.... to make a laundry list short, the amount of work per employee is unrealistic and not able to be performed, people are hired in management positions that really have no idea what they are doing and the atmosphere and environment is soud, somber and times simply cold.

Advice to Senior ManagementResources are needed and please hire managers/ directors/ supervisors that know what they are doing.

    Terrible Experience

Clinical (Former Employee) Santa Barbara, CA

    ProsReputation of company world wide

ConsPoor management, low salaries, rigid schedules, micro managing, low morale overall

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease look at what your middle management is doing. Do you want to support stagnant "yes" people or do you want to foster dynamic and creative thinking? The Santa Barbara site is rampant with mediocre "leaders" and old school office politics.
Take a look at the turnover rate and ask yourselves ( or better yet, ask your employees) why?

    Pharm Sales

    Senior Territory Manager (Former Employee)

ProsThe money, bonus and salary are best things about this company.

Consno work life balance, they own you for that salary/bonus/benefits. they will get rid of you at the drop of a dime if there's anything at all they don't like, and you won't even know they're planning it.

    Demotivating work environment

    (Current Employee)

Pros-The compensation and benefits are decent
    -The work load is acceptable
    -The projects are interesting
    -The location is pleasant

Cons-Very hard to get a promotion if you're not friend with the right people in upper management
-Because of this, some people end up in high level positions without having the competences and experience
-This results in most people having given up on the idea of getting rewarded or recognized for their hard work

Advice to Senior ManagementSome things are pretty obvious by now as to where certain issues come from, so I will just say to management "Stop burying your head in the sand"

Good Place to Start but No Opportunity for Advancement

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Waco, TX

ProsGreat health benefits, good place to start in pharma industry, financially stable company, good corporate mission and core policies, decent starting salaries

ConsLittle room for advancement, small salary increases, small to minimal bonuses, poor work - life balance, very strict sick time policy, nepatism through out the facility, no work at home policy.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop creating positions for the wives of favored employees, develop a work at home or flex time policy, develp better bonuses and salary increases for everyone (even the hourly employees). Develop a mentoring program to help increase promoting from within.

    Mediocre at best

Scientist (Current Employee) Santa Barbara, CA

ProsThe best part of working at Allergan were my coworkers. Overall the staff was friendly and fun.

ConsSenior management believed in a "matrix" structure which basically meant they could be lazy in designing the reporting structure. Employees would report to one manager but be working on projects for a different manager. As a lower level manager this made it much more difficult to delegate projects because I had to constantly negotiate for each employee's time. This structure caused significant friction between lower level management. This was worsened by the fact that upper management in the research division refused to assign project leaders which led to infighting and backstabbing. Rapid turnover in HR did not help matters.

Advice to Senior ManagementProviding no structure is just as bad for team productivity and moral as micromanagement. Failure to do so will drive good employees away.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
