I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pay is good, benefits are decent, they start you with over three weeks vacation in the first year. We used to get bonuses based on realistic goals.

    Cons

They change your schedule multiple times a year. Management is now a holy terror. Mandatory overtime is now just part of your regular schedule so you can forget about family time. They continue to try and outsource our jobs. Management has set goals so high that they are unattainable given the equipment that we have and the lack of support groups (maintenance, electricians, engineering, skilled trades) Our best skilled trades have left to go elsewhere for better work environment and opportunity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the employees right. Settle on a contract with the IAM so Lake City can get back to churning out world class ammo made in the heartland instead of outsourcing our jobs and trying to micromanage us into oblivion.

    Pros

Enjoyed the work for the most part. Worked on the cutting edge of some processes and technologies.

    Cons

Frustrated when working with the government (defense) and ATK project managers working on government projects. They are slow to respond to requests for changes.
Ignore issues and problems associated with products and manufacturing processes.

    Pros

Fun and interesting work. Nice location. Minimal whip cracking.

    Cons

Management's self importance. Leadership is largely parasitic, at it's best when it does nothing.

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

They provide good pay and solid benefits package for salary & wage. Work has been steady and dependable for many years. They also have assistance for continuing education, which unfortunately many employees do not utilize. The company does not push this very hard though.

    Cons

Biggest complaints are lack of clear communication and utilization of resources. Due to significant diversification, company missions are generalized with very little top down communication. This may change with coming spin off. Very often mid level managers to local directors won't share info because they themselves have none passed to them, that's a problem. Also, while a technical division, they believe engineers do it all, from engineering, to IT, to administration. If you do not have engineer in your education title somewhere, don't bother. If you do, many doors are open. From a company standpoint this seems wasteful as many quality individuals leave because of this lack of opportunity despite actual expertise in an area, and many people getting approved educations must leave when complete to find placement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be better informed and share that info in a relevant manner. Recognize potential and proper skill application, not only titles. Things would perform better if 90% of quality talent was not in perpetual exodus.

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent co workers, tools, opportunities for learning. Pretty good compensation package, but all salaries in Utah are low compared to other states.

    Cons

Middle management doesn't really know what their direct reports do on a daily basis. Lots of uncertainty coming with the Orbital merger.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are nervous and worried about the future. Stop the excuse of "we can't say anything" and share some facts about what the next year might look like.

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I worked in the corporate office when it was in Eden Prairie. Very reliable, consistent work.

    Cons

No employee development or advancement. A person above would have to retire before someone below was promoted. No training opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Department level managers should spend more time helping their people create professional development plans that align with department goals. This would help make the EADT review tool more useful.

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Not trying to be flip or sarcastic but... no longer working for Propulsion added to my life span. If you are a millennial and have six months in you are golden until you turn forty. A managers prepare for each RIF, they are reminded of that unwritten rule. Pay was decent but some directors have their subordinates working overtime, 20 to 25% so they can hire young workers now in hopes of capturing the black art of the older workers.

    Cons

Most young people are there only for a notch in their resume and if you are 55 or older there is a giant target on your back. My Manager instructed her subs to never tell upper management anything that would reflect poorly on them. Paint a rosy picture of how successfully we kicked butt and took names but stop short of where things turn south. Insinuate blame on another department. I pose a question for you... if the Government could not afford Ares, how can they afford heavy lift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Orbital should drop the ATK name as a soon as possible. The industry doesn't like ATK and their perceived high production costs. One specific VP needs to get rid of the training paints and cowboy-up.

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The company has fairly good benefits but the medical costs are quite steep for a large company. I went to work here for the medical benefits during this crappy time of Obama care that's make heath care unaffordable.

    Cons

After so many layoffs, the moral is low and the management don't seem to get to excited about much. the work can be boring at times since they do everything over and over again. Tough to compete against the older people that have been there for a while so be prepared to eat bread crumbs fora while.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to your employees. take them to lunch when they hire on. Make them feel like they are valuable and promote good moral.
