Hartford, CT

Current Employee – been working at Allstate full-time for more than 8 years

ProsIndepence, excellent training program, great management and staff support. Excellent promotion and career path opportunities, open and fair internal hiring program. Good benefits including generous 401k matching and pension programs.

ConsCompensation for the amount of expected production and performance seems lower than industry standard. Twelve hour workdays and the number of nights spent in hotels on the road can become physically and mentally draining.

ProsI love working for Allstate. It is a company that really provides its employees with a couple different things. First of all, they offer generous benefits; a pension and a 401k, generous time-off and cost-effective medical benefits. Secondly, the company offers employees many opportunities to advance, either in the work that they do or in a different department. An employee can have multiple careers during their employment with Allstate. The opportunities are numerous.

I am a person that worked at Allstate and then left the company to try some other things. Over a period of years, I worked at a couple companies and they did not touch Allstate. I finally was able to return to Allstate last year and I can firmly say; the grass is not always greener on the other side. It definitely was not in my case.

I would recommend a career at Allstate to anyone.

ConsRetirment is very far away ...

Cross Plains, WI

Former Employee – worked at Allstate full-time for more than a year

ProsI do not know if all good things that I can say about the company is just due to the location I was In or the rest of the company is good as well, but I still could feel that they sincerely trying to be good to their customers and that kind of made employees feel good as well. It is nice to go to work and believe that you are doing something for a good cause.
Schedule had enough flexibility to make it an extra great perk.
Some managers were absolutely great, some were OK, but an overall, my impression about the company and direction they are heading is pretty good.
The pay was they same or bit lower than other places in similar industry, but again - the company culture was giving enough satisfaction to deal with it.
Benefits were good (Health insurance, 411k etc...)
Pretty transparent - we had pretty good idea who our Top Managers were and saw or had some news from them pretty often.

ConsPay was the same or a bit lower than pay in my area for the same industry.
Location I was working in closed down, unfortunately (but I have to say that Management treated 'closing' process pretty well and made an extra effort to make sure many 'laid off' people were able to find jobs after that pretty soon - some people choose to move with the company to different states as well)
Possibilities for growth were limited in the location I was in. If you wanted to 'grow' you often had to move to a different state.
I liked the company but decided that Insurance Industry is not my favorite direction in life.

Advice to Senior ManagementA little bit more connection with new technologies and Social Media would be good. It seems like company is trying to catch up there but not quite on a level yet.
Keep working on "Customer First" culture. It is important and it does makes a difference.
Just want to say 'thanks' for time I was there and good luck to the company.

Rochester, MN

Current Employee – been working at Allstate full-time for less than a year

ProsUp to date systems, transparent pricing and excellent work environment.

ConsLimited commercial and Farm market. Also successful agents will have to be managers of a small business not sales people. Insurance Companies who use a captive agent distribution system are moving to fewer agencies with higher policy counts. In order to succeed agents have to manage their sales and service staff and do less selling themselves. This is a trend that has been underway for the last 10 years.

ProsYou get to travel the US and work directly with the customers. The training really prepares you for the position and your manager is always available.

ConsThis position is VERY stressful and it is hard to maintain a work/life balance.

Sherman, TX

Former Employee – worked at Allstate full-time for less than a year

ProsHours were from 9am to 5pm and we were off on the weekends. It suited my family life. The office staff was extremely small, my office manager and the Insurance Agent(Owner). I loved working there and had i stayed longer, i would have pursued my insurance license. I was taught so much about insurance, and if you cared you were shown the ropes within reason of course.

ConsThe only way to advance would be to become an Independent Insurance Agent. That is the way to make a difference in income. Working in the smaller office i was paid modest, but like i said, it fit my family life at the time. No health insurance or retirement plan either, but if your ready for your own business, then this is for you.

Advice to Senior Managementnon, my boss(es) were cool
