I have been working at Altera full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Altera operates in a duopoly, so business is usually good and bonus and profit sharing happen across the board. The company is mid size, so you can actually know people from different departments. Benefits are good too and the campus is over all very nice.

    Cons

Some department are ruled by old timers and it is very hard to grow. After several product delays, there is a sense of pessimism and resignation that things really can not change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The VP and SVPs should be held accountable for perennially delayed products. To expect engineers to deliver on unrealistic time lines again and again is a recipe for disaster.

I have been working at Altera (more than a year)

    Pros

Altera has been very good about my personal growth; they provided funding for professional development training including project management courses and conference admission fees. They also provided funding for employee moral events such as running events and team outings. Coworkers are generally receptive to questions and are very keen to help other employees.

    Cons

Much more experienced employees, so there is a knowledge and age gap between interns/new hires and other employees. Employee base is male dominated.

  6. Interesting company

I have been working at Altera full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Altera have a bright future in the FPGA business and FPGA is the asic of tomorow (FPGA will eat all the ASIC chip).

    Cons

The recent change in altera IC design depart have create a bad atmosphere for every one to work in. It's just too much politics at the TOP level management and this drags down the whole ICE department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the politics. Do what you mean and only say what you will do.

I have been working at Altera

    Pros

Very challenging work, great benefits (Health, vision, dental, others), compensation is fair (I guess, but that's why I'm looking on Glass Door to see how it compares), opportunities for moving around within the company do exist. Work/life balance is pretty good. Campus in San Jose has pretty good perks.

    Cons

Office politics (same anywhere), decisions made by committee, slow to react to market shifts, data driven decision making, etc. More recently, political correctness has gotten in the heads of management to the point of being a distraction.

Limited career growth opportunities. Challenge to do well if you are different
