"Life time employment", right up until they let you go.

Territory Sales Manager (Current Employee)
Boston, MA

I have been working at Altria full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGood pay and benefits. At one time, they cared about, and they fully invested in your development.

ConsHighly stigmatized product. Telling friends and relatives that you sell cigarettes. This is a very mature industry. Highly regulated and highly taxed products. Taxation, which will never go away and is a major threat to the industry. You have to be willing to relocate any where in the U.S. and at any time if you want to get promoted. Random Re-deployment of Territories.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease don't tell people its "life time employment".

Great compensation, big business management styles

Territory Sales Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Altria full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe base salary is competitive as well as bonuses for meeting sales initiatives makes this a great place to start a career. They provide you with a car as well as giving 3 weeks of vacation with floating holidays. A great work-life balance in this role. There is also great opportunity to move up within the company to management roles.

ConsYou are working for a tobacco company! Some of their business strategies I found to be incredibly unfair and even a little oppressive. Although the opportunity to move up is great, they don't allow you to chose where you want to go. The upper management was a whole different issue. Remember, you are in BIG business and everyone is willing to step on everyone else to get where they want to be.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more knowledgable about the roles of the people for whom you are managing. Understand the utter stupidity of some of the things we are required to do and don't micro-manage your employees.

Best/worst Job Ever

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA

I worked at Altria full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDecent management team, hours are ok. Pays above minimum wage.

ConsUpper management in the company honestly cares very little about their employees

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to work together; stop throwing each other under the bus. Remember ownership? Practice what you preach, guys.

Challenging and competitive place to work

HQ Position (Current Employee)
Richmond, VA

I have been working at Altria full-time for more than 10 years

Pros- Complex business environment to compete within
- Opportunity to create solutions to challenging business problems
- Management is responsive to work/life balance issues
- Earn respect and autonomy in your position

Cons- Promote people too fast. People often are more focused on getting to the next position instead of doing a good job in their current position
- Competition is fierce and can be cut-throat
- Declining industry and a feeling of looming 'cuts'
- Big difference in the developmental opportunities provided to 'Advancement' candidates vs. everyone else

Advice to Senior ManagementLess emphasis on bucketing people into 'advancement' vs 'not advancement'. This constant differentiation is causing a split within the organization that causes a lack of collaboration on business initiatives.

Great brands, but struggling to innovate beyond the core business

Associate Principal Engineer (Current Employee)
Richmond, VA

I have been working at Altria full-time for more than 10 years

Pros- Great brands: Marlboro, Copenhagen, Skoal, Black & Mild
- Solid balance sheet and market capitalization (Fortune 200)
- Culture of camaraderie in some parts of the organization that make it fun to come to work every day
- Good compensation and benefits
- Commitment to attract and retain talent

Cons- Lack of empathy with the consumer
- Risk adverse culture that negatively impact company's ability to innovate beyond the core business
- Controversial product category (Tobacco)
- Declining cigarette category which is responsible for 90%+ of Altria revenues
- Low diversity in some parts of the organization, which translates in old-school line of thought

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to create a Global Innovation organization that is responsible to drive new breakthrough concepts towards commercialization, aside from Marketing and Product Development. Just because it's important for employees to drive innovation in what they do, does not mean that there is no need for an Innovation organization. Just like the responsibility of every employee to exhibit fiduciary responsibility does not preclude the existence of a Finance department.

Great company and benefits, monotonous job

Territory Sales Manager (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Altria full-time for more than a year

ProsCompetitive pay for entry-level position, great benefits (health insurance, DPS, life insurance, etc). Great people, most people try to help each other.

ConsThe job can become very monotonous very fast. For the TSM (Territory Sales Manager) position, you are in charge of about 150 stores and depending on your area it can get old fast.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop pushing so many initiatives on us at once. If we can create out own game plans and have 6 months to implement, it will help grow the business more than pushing a carton of cigarettes on 20 stores.

Had potential, but wasn't great for Government Affairs internship experience

Temporary Professional (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at Altria as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat pay
flexible schedules (if you're an intern)
Interaction with High-level Executives
Corporate/For-Profit Experience within a Fortune 100 Company
Opportunities for professional development (for full-time salaried employees).

ConsMany people/companies/organizations outside of the tobacco industry do not like Altria so good luck getting a job with Altria on your resume. For me, the culture was too professional, the hours were too long (9-6), and there were massive lay-offs (3 organizational restructurings within 4 years) and I would expect more to come in the future. Long-term employment potential and growth seemed to be limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementSome higher level management were too "hands-off" when it came to managing interns. I suggest you take a greater interest in the Temporary Professionals. As an intern in Government Affairs, the job responsibilities were not clear and the intern position/program was not very well structured. I had way too much time to do nothing and when it came to doing the work, I was never told the "big picture" so most of what I did made little sense.

Company is too focused on young employees. Unrealistic monthly projects.

Territory Sales Manager (Current Employee)
Bedminster, NJ

I have been working at Altria full-time for more than 10 years

Proscompetitve salary, company car, health insurance, profit sharing

ConsIn order to be promoted, a TSM must be willing to relocate. Many seasoned employees are not able to relocate. The company is now focused on very young, inexperienced college graduates and it is promoting them too quickly. Many of these new hires are making very good salaries and are great at computers but know nothing about life, sales or human nature. Most believe that they are amazing and that the world owes them everything because they are now managers and make a lot of money. However this has caused a lot of resentment in the organization. Many of these managers will do anything to get ahead. The company used to be a great place to work. However now it is just a job. It is difficult to reason with people who don't have a mortgage, don't have a family to maintain, don't have responsibilities besides work and who for the most part have never worked anywhere else. They expect this to be a lifestyle instead of a job.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs more and more of the seasoned employees retire, this company is moving in the wrong direction. For all of the "smarts" that the new hires bring, they lack life experience, sales skills, personality, compassion........ Management should think about our company values first and select leaders for managemnt positions. Please stop selecting people who will kill each other to get ahead and yes you to death.
