I have been working at Altria full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

-Starting pay and benefits are fantastic
-Ability to move up within first year or two
-Coworkers are genuinely good people who want to help you
-Company has taken to heart work/life balance and creating a better culture

    Cons

-While in their persuit for diversity, it appears some employees get advanced simply due to their race or sex, not for performance.
-HQ seems to launch half baked ideas that the sales force has to fumble through to implement
-If you want to move up you will likely have to relocate for each advancement, but that is the nature of the beast with a large sales organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold HQ teams more accountable and consult the field more often. Heed the feedback from the field, we are your front line!

Consider doing 360 feedback for promotions and year end reviews. A person's perception by peers can sometimes be vastly different than the perception by management and this should be included in assessments for promotion and year end performance.

    I worked at Altria

    Pros

Altria values its employees by providing great training and benefits. Salaries are not the highest, but they make up for it in other ways.

    Cons

Upper management is still somewhat old school, going back to the 'old boy' network. This has improved significantly in recent years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow for greater communication and feedback among the rank and file. Managers should be able to challenge senior management, which can actually improve the overall decision making process.

I have been working at Altria full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Flexible schedule with a lot of control over work load (you have tasks, get them done on time and well. No one micromanages unless you are not performing)
-Most accounts are friendly yet challenging so it is not boring
-Company looks out for your best interest and is open and honest around where you stand and how you are performing
    - Great company culture. Never met someone I didn't like including the Executive Management Team
-If you like sales, then you will love this job. "If you can do tobacco, you can do anything." Altria does a great job training you on how to connect with your clients with numerous sale strategies such as gathering useful quantitative and qualitative data and catering it to your accounts needs.
-Company is constantly moving forward with what's trending in the market
-You are also provided numerous helpful resources and tools to set you up for success. Altria is also very good at taking feedback so innovation is imbedded in its DNA.
-You are in control of YOUR territory so you have a lot of responsibility and freedom to do what you will with it such as developing a territory plan to increase your client and company sales.

    Cons

-Promotion track changed where it is still too new to understand what the exact criteria/ process is to get promoted. Not much infrastructure around it besides 4 factors that they look at and management does not really check in or direct you on how to train against those competencies. It's more like you go and train yourself and prove to us that you complete each bucket and then we let you know if you can be promoted or not. If it is a no, then you will never be promoted.

-Entry Level TSM does not lead or really work in a team. You are essentially by yourself 90% of the time so it can get lonely and leadership development activities are not there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Inclusion is key. Break these barriers of limited communication and reach out to employees more than just a few emails here and there. Most interaction you get with your manager is twice a month and your manager's boss is less than 5 times a year.
