I worked at Altria full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Pay, benefits, easy job once you understand what you're doing. Training. Company car. Good feedback

    Cons

Advancement depends entirely on your relationship with upper management. New hires out of college are put through check in processes and projects that normal reps don't do. This is all fine, since you're trying to be promoted to a management position. However this is all in addition to the normal work that is required and expected. Your bonus is based on how many tasks you take on and complete. There is no compensation based on business growth in a territory. Thus because of this process, young, strong reps leave for other companies. Micro managed or not managed at all. You can work your own hours - depends on your manager. Among many other cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensate your reps with some kind of commission structure. More defined path for promotion candidates

Brand management internship. Very comprehensive internship that introduced me to the realm of marketing.

I have been working at Altria as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Paid internship, great experience, opened my eyes to the "real" world of marketing, advertising, and strategy outside of a college classroom. Gain insight into a heavily regulated industry and learn how the system works from legal to creative.

    Cons

Very corporate feeling and bureaucratic. You need to be able to be passionate about tobacco-related products, which can be difficult since it is very controversial.

I worked at Altria as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Learning how to implement strategy helps a lot in an interview.

    Cons

You work for a cancer stick company. Intern's opinions are not valued highly

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have different internships for the same company (finance, investment, trading, etc.)

I have been working at Altria full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people you work with make it a good place to work. Historically, good benefits and pay. Top management seems to want the right things, but I can't see a change yet with my work life balance.

    Cons

Reduction in head count has led to many pulling long hours and no reduction in work. Not sure how people can sustain and opportunities to advance are few and far between. The amount of administration work and approvals to do simple things is exhausting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your people, the hierarchy and levelism makes it so hard to get a simple job done. Why does everything have to be presented to a vp before a decision can be made. They keep asking for feedback and take surveys but we never hear anything. Tired of providing feedback... What are you going to do with the feedback I already gave?

I have been working at Altria full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Altria seems committed to assisting transitioning veterans to find employment by offering a military skills translator that pairs your skills with the military schooling and certifications you have attained. They then take those skills and present you with open jobs that you seem to be qualified for. You then apply. It's very easy and veteran friendly.

    Cons

However, there is no place for a vet to post a DD214 to show veteran status or any indication in the application process that veterans will get preference under current law.

    Pros

Good benefits; they pay higher than the average employer.

    Cons

They decide half way through the year who they are going to promote.. absent any concrete variables. It is helter skelter. They put managers into roles that have no experience in that field/role but they have so much money they don't care how much money is wasted in corrections, redundancy, ill prepared workers, etc. It has gotten so everything is governed by audit and controls... if when audit has no knowledge of the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get with the real world and hire from outside REAL talent.

I have been working at Altria full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very challenging product to market requiring creative and critical thinking. The category continues to evolve with the entry of new alternatives to cigarettes and this company has excellent infrastructure in place to lead.

    Cons

Company needs to consider more diversity in their management ranks. There is little representation of women and people of color leading teams. The focus is on innovation rather than diversity which may lead to more innovation naturally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take full advantage of your diverse workforce. Be open to new ideas and business solutions.

Ok place to start for field sales.

I have been working at Altria

    Pros

They hire lots of smart engaging recent college grads and the training is good at first. Pay and benefits are good for someone just out of college. Company car. Flexibility- you essentially set your own schedule as long as you make all your calls each month no one will be checking over your shoulder.

    Cons

Lots. First and foremost you spend all day in gas stations which gets really old, fast. Hardly ever see peers or manager (once a month max). Have to deal with retailers who can be uneducated, sexist, and crude. Management makes the job out to be something it absolutely is not, and any time you work with them you have to put on dog and pony show. You have very little control over business results but are still held accountable. Ultimately this job just became incredibly boring, mundane, and not challenging. That on top of having the stigma of working for a tobacco company. Your manager has a lot to do with your success- if you get a lazy manager you'll be stuck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All middle management should have to do rotations making calls. Having a unit manager who has not managed a territory in 15-20 years has no real life experience about what the job is because it has changed so much since "back in the day"
