    Pros

Stable jobs, nice people at the mid to lower levels.

    Cons

Senior management controlling and elitist. Company is very level conscious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step out of the box and be real thought leaders. It's the only way you will ever become an industry leading IOU.

I worked at Ameren full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company Values, Co-workers, Salary, Benefits, leadership changes have made it a better more diverse and fair, place to work...enjoyed helping customers understand the company and their services. perks all the time, awesome work environment. parties food days...etc

    Cons

Work-Life balance, with forced Overtime, was hard to plan for family, social, or other events outside of normal work hours. There is very little room for promotion, you may get opportunities to be apart different team or aspects of customer service but upward mobility is very competitive

I worked at Ameren full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very good health benefits, compensation was good. Work life balance was great.

    Cons

Way too many layers of Management, Slow to change, Unwilling to take risks or be proactive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a definite lack of willingness on the part of upper management to actually "manage" the business. Operating like an old utility will only get you so far. Too many times have I watched opportunities roll past due to indecision. To make matters worse there is no accountability for those bad decisions.

I worked at Ameren full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Ameren has great employee benefits: domestic partner benefits, matching 401K and employee discounts and services. Work flexibility is decent for the most part for management employees. Pay is decent, but could be better. The company has made great strides in increasing public image and employee branding and culture.

    Cons

Movement in the company is uncommon. It is easier to make a lateral move than to advance your career. The strong focus on diversity is more polarizing that it is uniting. Hires and transfers seem to be made based on image rather than skill.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees about what matters to them rather than listening to what the business world says should be important to employees.

    I worked at Ameren

    Pros

Good work/life balance, it was not uncommon to see fellow coworkers arriving at 7AM and leaving at 3PM each day. Most people in the company are nice and easy to get along with. Good benefits and a decent match on the 401k. Compensation was good for the amount of work required.

    Cons

For those trying to challenge themselves, Ameren might not be the best place to work. There are very few projects, which is partially a function of the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" mentality that is common among utilities. There is simply no urgency to improve processes or look for efficiencies. Along those lines, there is very little room for creative thinking. Workers are expected to do what they are told and nothing else. Promotions are usually based on seniority rather than merit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Be more transparent -- "regular" employees don't really know what management is trying to accomplish
    - Be more open to new ideas -- the company is conservative, but that doesn't mean it should be closed to new ideas

I have been working at Ameren

    Pros

Pay is good for the area.

    Cons

Slow to change direction. Doesn't understand customers or changing expectations of the customer for product delivery. Ineptness at addressing relationships with regulators and governmental bodies has resulted in deterioration of profit margins and degraded financial ratings. Company's mis-handling of transition to market based rates in Illinois was a major disaster that may be downfall of whole company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unload the coal, embrace environmentally sound technologies for generation of power. Hiring a pretty face (Karen Foss) for PR will not cover up the previous poor decisions that have been made nor regain the customer's trust and respect.
