    I worked at AmeriCorps

    Pros

I had an awesome experience and gained some great contacts working with Americorps in Los Angeles. You truly feel like you're making an impact in the community.

    Cons

The stipend is absolutely horrible so if you need help paying the bills this is not a good option. Additionally, the hour expectations balanced with a school schedule make it difficult to maintain another job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I realize this is a government entity so it is impossible to gain too much more money, but if possible a stipend increase or additional benefits is needed to allow the students to survive.

I worked at AmeriCorps part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work hours will not conflict with school hours. Americorps provides excellent opportunities to learn how to lead individually and how to cooperate with large groups of people. Students will learn valuable skills such as grant writing, how to work with various groups of people, multi-tasking skills, and will have hundreds of hours to devote to community service and non-for-profit projects within their community.

    Cons

Outside requirements may be time consuming. The application process is about 40 pages long and requires 3 references to write and send in to the student's application office for Americorps. Not all schools participate in Americorps. The program I selected provided me with a monthly allowance and by the end of my service term, I received a $2000 grant which helped greatly with school housing fees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Generally the program is overlooked by a superior and actually run by grad students. It is easy for your supervisor to get caught up in other projects, so, the student must be very organized and time-conscious.

I worked at AmeriCorps as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

I was given the opportunity to travel the country, gain new skills, and work with like minded people. I gained a wealth of new skills in a short amount of time. They provide training, support and education.

    Cons

You are not compensated very well. You receive a very modest stipend (they do pay for food, work based travel, and living expenses). The education award is not very much and is taxed if you don't use it correctly (overtime as opposed to all in one go), you will lose most of it to taxes. The working conditions are not necessarily glamorous and you may experience things you don't want (sleeping in tents for weeks at a time, sharing a bedroom with 4 other people). It's a rigorous experience and you really need to prepare yourself for it. (But it's totally worth it!)

I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Extremely satisfying experiences, great opportunity to help improve local community, ability to work idependently, and offers grants for education

    Cons

Working environments can be challenging (in my case, I worked with many children with behavioral problems), compensation is little, and sometimes can get "stuck" without much guidance

    Pros

The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps is part of a network of national service programs under the Corporation for National Service and it is just one out of 600 programs in AmeriCorps. NCCC is a 10-month residential program for individuals between the ages of 18-24 years old. Members serve on teams of 10-11 at one of our four region campuses located in Denver, CO; Baltimore, MD; Sacramento, CA and Vinton, IA. Teams serve on projects that last from one day to nine weeks in the areas of energy conservation, environmental stewardship, urban & rural development, infrastructure improvement, and disaster relief. In exchange, members receive an education award, room & board, living allowance, medical insurance, uniforms, training, and transportation to and from the campus at the beginning and end of the year.

    Cons

-Low pay in exchange for free travel, meals, housing, and transportation
-Long and sometimes rigorous work days

I have been working at AmeriCorps as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

You get to see areas you normally would not get to go too. You get to see different landmarks and get to know local people. I had never been in the south before Americorps and now I want to move down there, everyone was so hospitable.

    Cons

While most members of Americorps are outstanding, there are those select few who you would not expect to see in an organization meant to help others. In my year there were individuals who would steal anything they could get too, they would also take the TV cards out of any public TV so they would have free rain to watch what they wanted when they wanted. Stole food out of every teams fridge, and just left trash and debree wherever they went. Just vile people who cared only about themselves, and I have no idea why they joined Americorps with attitudes like that. Also when caught with stolen items the individuals were given 3 warning before termination. Americorps was way too lenient on them. Keep in mind though these were only 10 or 12 out of 200+ so did not ruin the amazing experience.
