Bureaucratic and cold

I worked at AmeriGas Partners full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood pay, benefits, training. Not bad as a new employee.

ConsAuthoritarian management culture that micro-manages excessively.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to instill fear in employees to make them perform better.

More cocerned about share holders and not being sued by the public than thier employees.

Service (Former Employee)
Las Vegas, NV

I worked at AmeriGas Partners full-time for more than 8 years

ProsBenefit package was good overall.

ConsYou can lose your job at the drop of a pen, literally. After 9 1/2 years of service I was terminated for failure to properly document my paperwork in an isolated incident. Everything has to be able to hold in court.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to find time to invest in your employees. I know the paper work and time on conference calls and emails will and do eat up your day but if you don't stay on top of their everyday work it will cost you a valuable employee. Corporate will eat both of you up.

Do not recommend

IT Engineer (Current Employee)
King of Prussia, PA

I have been working at AmeriGas Partners

ProsA lot of opportunity to learn new technologies because a lot of Techs are so busy and over worked.

ConsMorale is horrible.
Do not trust what you are being told.
People are only out for themselves.
Nobody is held accountable for their actions and a lot of finger pointing.
They do not like people with opninions.
No remote work.
Very, very political.
No appreciation you can never do enough.
If you don't play the game your never going to succeed.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs far as IT, hire managers that actually have a strong Technical understanding of their area. Unqualified and unprofessional managers and leads. Sr. Management should beware of false info and do some investigating on their own. Possibly speak to the engineers or analyst and not the leads and managers.

AmeriGas Could Do More

Delivery Driver (Current Employee)

I have been working at AmeriGas Partners

ProsConstantly stress safety for customers and employees. Has fairly inexpensive health insurance, definitlely not paid in full. Is not real good at replacing major pieces of equipment because of the cost.

ConsMajor dissappointment with the company is how it compensates their workers. There seems to be a standardized wage increase of about 2.5 percent per year regardless of whether the company has done good or bad financially. They use the cover of a supposedly detailed annual review of your performance and everyone gets the same 2.3-2.5 percent incresee. It makes the whole review process a farce and for looks only. Managers are given the same runaround and the only way to get a real increase in income is to quit and work for someone else. Of course, there is a non-compete contract which makes it diffucult to work for another supplier under the suspicion that you will reveal "trade secrets" to your new employer. Everybody in the propane business works with pretty much the same margins off the pipeline and are lookinf for the same customers. There's not a lot of "trade secret" to reveal. It just seems a convenient way to keep an ex-employee from leaving because it will be difficult to find the same kind of work for the duration of the non-compete agreement (two years)
Last year, the company made record profits for it's investors, but the workers didn't even get a cost of living increase. The employees are strongly discouraged from considering unionizing. There appears to be a concerted effort to keep the employees isolated in order to lever them into accepting sub-standard wages even though working with hazardous materials. A union would not allow them to bludgeion individuals into accepting sub-coost of living increases. This is something that AmeriGas does not want to have to deal with.
And AmeriGas wonders why it has the employee turnover that it has in the working ranks.
Go Figure
Is not real good at replacing major pieces of equipment because of the cost.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay your people in the trenches a decent LIVING wage. If you did, you wouldn't have the employee turnover, would spend less on training, and would have a more loyal workforce. AmeriGas wants to be a "world class" operation. Until you realize the people on the ground are important and need to make a living too, this isn't going to happen. Keep on feeding your investors the big return and screw the ones out here making the money for them and it will eventually backfire on you.

Great local employees, poor middle and senior management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at AmeriGas Partners

ProsA lot of great people at district offices. Most are long-term employees with excellent industry knowledge. They tend to be team players who have come onboard through acquisitions. Benefits are pretty good. If you are lucky enough to have a good manager, this can be a good opportunity.

ConsVery minimal increases given during annual performance reviews. Middle management says they are accountable for many things, however district managers are almost always blamed and terminated instead. Long-term employees do not receive the respect that they have earned.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to what employees in the field are saying. Although they may not have an important title or a degree, they are the backbone of the company. Customers develop relationships with these employees, not with executives. Change the environment which you've created that causes employees to work in a constant state of fear that they may be terminated. This is distracting and takes focus away from safety. Develop an bonus program for hourly employees that is not based primarily on a system of measuring growth which is not equitable. Stop depleting your most valuable resource: employees with years of industry experience who are terminated without thought or any consideration given to how much time they have dedicated to you.

Can be a difficult place to work, management's attitude fluctuates with seasons and propane sales

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at AmeriGas Partners

ProsCompany generally does well year over year but usually at the cost of layoffs. For most part the company still has a small company feel and good employees.

ConsSome upper management has been with the company for way to long and refusing to grow and develop the company culture to where it should be. Human resources practices are very antiquated and are not in-line with current expectations. Work-life balance does not exist in this company. Constant seasonal lay-offs put way to much stress on the field and prevent changes from taking place.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a look at the company practices. Benchmark with some other companies and evaluate HR policies and procedures.
