Good Job

Production Planner (Current Employee)
Fort Worth, TX

I have been working at American Airlines full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood People for the most part, clean facilities, time off when you need with a good manager, some days you can travel but its getting worse

ConsManagement VS. Union Environment, Too much Me and I in the workforce and not enough Team - Created by poor management styles - didn't get the idea that they really care, in other words hit the door if you don't like it management attitudes

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to do a better job for the Sr. employees (Pay)

Sales Rep.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at American Airlines full-time for more than 10 years

ProsTravel and great co-workers. Company is innovative at surviving.

ConsThe call center is the only non-unionized work group in the airline. Therefore, res is the first to give up money in economic downturns and the last to get the money and benefits back on the uptick. As in all call centers, management micro manages it's workforce(because they can) and the tech capability to quantify everything has outpaced their ability
to balance their employees quality of work life. Not enough money has been put in the computer system, and that hobbles the employees ability to perform their duties. There is a disconnect from upper management on the basic realties of how, and what their lower level employees need to perform their jobs. I think there is an attitude of disrespect to the lower tier, first line of contact to the public workers, and that is counter-intuitive to employee and customer satisfaction.

Advice to Senior ManagementUse more carrots and less stick with your employees. Lighten up a little. Res is a lean, profitable machine.

Bureaucracy and incompetence spoil an otherwise great company

Object Oriented Programmer/Analyst (Current Employee)
Fort Worth, TX

I have been working at American Airlines full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFantastic travel benefits, even for less-senior employees
Some really great people.
Company has fine ethics, diversity.
Company tried, in the past, to limit outsourcing and protect United States jobs. With restructuring/bankruptcy this is no longer possible, but was a valiant/ethical effort.
IT Area, particularly AA.com is improving.

ConsSome middle management sticking their noses into technical details they don't understand.
"Agile" project management philosophy is good, but is overly complicated and customized. Applied in a non-standard way in each department.
Lots of legacy, nasty software (SABRE/FOS)

Advice to Senior ManagementFix hiring standards
Reduce project funding model complexity further
Reduce "agile" complexity to get it to work

Fast paced environment

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at American Airlines full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat flight benefits, diverse employee base, very fast paced, get to work with some very smart people and learn a lot in a short time.

ConsLots of politics! Full flights so using flight benefits are difficult. Very long hours at office, lots of work trips which are not ideal if you have family with young kids. Compensation is not in line with work hours

Advice to Senior ManagementYour unions are dictating the future of this company. You need to re-energize your workforce and you need to hold all employees accountable - union and non union. Sleeping on the job should be a terminate on the spot and lose all benefits offense.....maybe then you might get some work done on midnight shifts.

I have been working at American Airlines full-time for more than 5 years

ProsToo much challenges, Diverse Environment, Free Hand to learn and implement cutting edge technologies (Depends upon the manager), Inter-company transfers, Great flight benefits, Good Medical Benefits

ConsWork-Life imbalance, Lethargic Management, Salary not up to the market value, Do not have automatic promotion, no increment or hike, less vacation, Old school Mentality

Advice to Senior ManagementInfuse fresh blood, More employee oriented benefits, increase salary

Rewarding and tiring!

Flight Attendant (Former Employee)
Fort Worth, TX

I worked at American Airlines full-time for more than 10 years

ProsAs a flight attendant is was able to see most of the U.S. as well as Canada and Mexico. Met wonderful people from all over the world.

ConsThe pay is terrible, management is completely out of touch about what really goes on at the airport. Long days and short nights. I stayed exhausted 24/7.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe employees care as much if not more than management about the success of American. The employees ARE the airline! It's really embarrassing apologizing for stupid management decisions a dozen times a day.

AA was wonderful until they filed for bankruptcy

Finance Director (Former Employee)
Fort Worth, TX

I worked at American Airlines full-time for more than 10 years

ProsRewarding work when considering that you are allowing individuals to meet family, or business commitments. If in the right position there is a lot of responsibility.

ConsBureaucratic, any decision must go through a significant number of levels both vertically and horizontally any of which can stop the progress. Pay is low for responsibility, which used to be offset by benefits.
