    Pros

You receive a 50% employee discount

    Cons

Rude manager, you spend more than you actually earn (because you have to wear head-to-toe American Apparel to work everyday)

    Pros

Impossible to get fired, great people working for little to no pay

    Cons

Managers with no sales experience or any idea on how to manage a group of people. Call outs all the time. Store during the summer has no a/c so sweating profusely is commonplace. Late hours during summer, 10pm-11pm the store will close, when nobody has come in since 8pm because it's SoHo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more and hire based on ability not on looks

I have been working at American Apparel part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

High turnover so they're desperate to hire anyone - just show up to your interview wearing AA. Once you've reached "seniority" (after a few months) you have a lot of control over your schedule and learn to navigate the ropes so you get paid to do as little as possible. By the end, I spent most of my time sitting around on my phone or hanging idly with the sales associates (most of whom were really enjoyable to work with!). But hey, you get what you pay for, AA. Which is almost nothing.

    Cons

Unqualified, power-tripping management (store, backstock and district). Apparently their $11/hr job at this morally questionable company is all they aspire to in life. Once promoted, they routinely threaten meaningless write ups and send nagging emails demanding you to "reply in compliance" for things that they are often not doing correctly themselves! This creates a tense, high pressure environment despite extremely low wages. You're forced to wear AA's ugly, overpriced clothes (even worse, their carcinogenic shoes). Closers, expect to stay up to an hour longer than your scheduled shift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick to basics and best-sellers, instead of pushing new styles. Motivate employees with bonuses and higher salaries. Keep an eye on management to make sure they are still doing their job adequately - if they're getting paid more, they should be DOING more instead of pushing their share of the work to everyone else. Having employees anonymously review them once a month could be beneficial. A respectable management really makes a huge difference at the store level (this was apparent as we went through several management changes mid way at my store).

I have been working at American Apparel part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Discount ,flexible schedules ,and you can be promoted fast if you are favored.

    Cons

Favoritism is a big factor to being promoted and pay is horrible for the amount of responsibilities that a key holder has. Upper management undermines your position and staff tend to not listen to you. The amount of hours you receive will change with the way management feels about you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay better for this position

I worked at American Apparel full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great discount, good music in store, tasks and daily happenings are not very hard. Very easy entry level position and with the turnover rate, it's somewhat easy to get promoted if you show the slightest bit of capability.

    Cons

Management is awful. Period. Favoritism is a very big part in promotions. Managers are rude, sneaky, and do whatever they can to capitalize on your hard work. Select room for growth. Managers are absent in presence but love to harrass you over technology and ask for shift coverage, random passive aggressive notes/letters, or just absolutely nothing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house and start over. Your current managers are incompetent.

I worked at American Apparel full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

They offer a great discount and clothing allowance. The schedules are pretty flexible.

    Cons

The atmosphere is unprofessional and the company extremely poorly run. The pay is terrible and the culture is completely based on looks. It felt like high school working there. I would only recommend this job for a teenager after school who is looking to make some money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The whole company needs to be restructured. You'd have no idea it was an international clothing brand from working there.

I worked at American Apparel part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I started off loving the work atmosphere and their business model of vertical integration.

    Cons

Very, very disorganized, managed by very young college students who don't know how to manage others. In the span of 4 years I went through 7 managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of the store managers and the turn over rate won't be so high.
