I worked at American Century as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

People were friendly and welcoming, pay was good. Work-life balance wasn't great for being an intern. A weekend here or there would be expected, and working late was common.

    Cons

Company culture wasn't doing so great. There seemed to be growing discontent among many people.

I have been working at American Century full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work atmosphere and work-life balance. Company has been built on solid morals and sound investment practices.

    Cons

    Lack of training to advance.
Limited opportunities to advance since turnover is so low.
Leadership is in the day-to-day activities more so than not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunities to job-shadow, job-share, and/or job rotations so that individuals do not feel "stuck" in their current role.

  5. In this economy, not a bad place to work, but can be very political depending on a team.

I have been working at American Century

    Pros

Good benefits; pleasant work environment; steady information flow from top managers; the firm is growing which should create opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Relative to investment firms of the same size, the pay is so-so. Depending on the investment team, the company can be very political -- some managers clearly play favorites. Bonuses are capped.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Criticism for mistakes is dished out more generously than praise for achievements -- this should be changed.

    I worked at American Century

    Pros

Good benefits, nice people, flexible work schedules when needed, onsite fitness center, used to be a fun atmosphere, challenging work

    Cons

management, it seemed like if you weren't in the "group" you didn't have as great of a chance to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

look at competencies, not tenure or favortism when promoting people; examine your benefits, they aren't as good as you think they are.

I have been working at American Century

    Pros

set schedule, lovely office, comfortable culture, great benefits

    Cons

low wage scale, declining net retail business due to market and aging clientele

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decide if we're going to be a solely a boutique international and institutional firm, and kill the retail business. Or aggressively go after new retail business and up the compensation for employees to make it worth their while to get new business.

I have been working at American Century

    Pros

Tuition reimbursement. It defnitely pays to keep studying. No one can take your degrees away from you.

    Cons

Being a phone jockey. Even with constant study and advanced degrees, sometimes they only care about "the stats" when it comes to promotion eligibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The manager should not be the only gateway to other job opportunities. Interpretation of some of the stats are horribly inaccurrate.

  9. No advancement opportunity here.

    I worked at American Century

    Pros

25 cent soda pop and the large amount of PTO. For example after your first year with the company you get approximately 20 days off for PTO. Other positives would include the face that they will pay for your KC METRO bus pass if you agree not to drive. However, some dissapointments would be the cliques that are formed within the company. It is obvious internally whom these cliques are and if you are not part of the clique than you are more than likely not going to advance. This is coming from someone who got along very well with most everyone, but just didn't partake in the cliques events.

    Cons

There are not many opportunities for advancement internally. With many employees opportunities are passed on to external candidates even though it is communicated that there are opportunities for advancements.

I have been working at American Century

    Pros

    Culture is relaxed
    Benefits are good
    Employees treated well
    Management is generally flexible
    Reasonable amount of feedback
    Some opportunity for professional growth

    Cons

Opportunity for growth may be limited depending on division
    Overall compensation isn't terribly competitive
Can be mundane depending on position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall reasonable attempt balancing communication towards those in lower position. Transparency does appear limited in areas. Goals questionable at times given resources.
