    I worked at American Express

    Pros

Good work life balance if you're working in the right team for it. Nice culture and good people.

    Cons

Too many presentations and assessments made on who you are rather than what you've done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in a commercial leader to objectively review each business unit and its people.

I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you're open, upbeat and love networking, you'll fit in. Leadership highly valued. Very friendly, easy environment. Hard work generally valued. Excellent options for flexible working.

    Cons

Consensus based decision making slows everything down, to a ridiculous extent at times.
US HQ much less 'nice' in my experience - much more back biting, less collegiate, more passive aggressive
Poor pay in London mid management
limited senior opportunities outside of New York

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Incentivise on profitability, not volume
Make London pay more competitive and make HR far better, to stop losing talent

I have been working at American Express full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great work/life balance. Friendly colleagues, depending on the group you end up in. Good benefits. Great office location. Good brand.

    Cons

A culture as rapidly moving as molasses and lethal as quicksand. Gossip verging on back-stabbing is a norm. Unbelievably slow and risk-averse, reflected in hiring based on capabilities rather than aptitude - and leading to stagnation. So consensus-driven that nothing happens, and it feels like most management drive forward by checking themselves out in the vanity mirror. Dangerous HR policies to promote certain classes of individuals actually end up encouraging leaders to hire/promote really poor candidates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shake up the culture more aggressively than with the "growth mindset" stuff, revise the organisation to eliminate governance by consensus in order to make the company more nimble. Educate the top 50% on how to innovate. Organise your data and make it available to make business decisions. Realise that the rest of the world is a LOT bigger than the US and should receive an appropriate amount of resource and funding. Fundamentally rethink your diversity policy (which scarcely exists).

I worked at American Express full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    OK pay packet and benefits
Amex employ top professionals, so you will work in a very professional environment
You may run into a few amazing leaders
Amex is quite brave and innovative compared to other industry players
Big in US, not so much outside
You will learn ins and outs of management by objectives and boring things like budgeting, performance management, etc. It may prove useful
Good experience for a couple of years, then leave

    Cons

Typical financial services company, very shareholder profit oriented
No life work balance, you will feel squeezed like a lemon after couple of years
Perfect for traditionalists and those avoiding risk, but lay offs are frequent, so beware
Proper matrix organisation, very hierarchical, those who play politics get promoted

Current Employee - Project Manager in London, England (UK)

I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Dynamic, market driven and competitive organisation determined to remain a big player in financial services.
    - Committed to invest in developing digital products and tools for consumers and businesses.
    - Popular Board Leadership - Ken Chenault and his team are visionary, driven and passionate and that comes across in all of their communications.

    Cons

    - Focus has shifted more heavily toward the shareholder in recent years, with the employee feeling less part of a business 'family' and more a nameless commodity, albeit a reasonably paid commodity. This affects employee loyalty, commitment and enthusiasm.
    - IS/IT infrastructure (especially employee intranet) is challenging to work with.
    - Recent introduction of Blue Working in Servicing Centres adds to sterile/impersonal working environment.
    - Flawed meritocracy due to poorly coordinated and top down commitment to goals and deliverables, reliable metrics.
    - Gaps in leadership ability, quality, and credibility between the Board in New York and Regional/Local centres sometimes expose middle management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix top down gaps! Ensure commitment and alignment at all leadership levels to ensure regional and local centres fully understand and buy in to the plan.
