Intern at American Express

Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at American Express as an intern for less than a year

ProsAmerican Express has a global brand presence and operates in an array of financial industries allowing you to explore different opportunities across different markets

ConsApparantly the salary isn't as high as their competitors, but for a Penultimate Year Summer Intern, I am getting paid higher than some of my Investment Banking counterparts and also have a much more appealing work:life balance

Great company, strong focus on employee development

Project Manager (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at American Express full-time for more than 3 years

ProsHigh focus on employee development with good review and goal structure that ensures everyone in the company wants to grow and develop themselves as well as grow their colleagues. Ability to move jobs every 18 months, this is highly encouraged and happens easily through networking, recommendations and formal job applications. Large enough company to enable various experiences in different business units, different functions as well as different level (i.e. central vs. local).

ConsSomewhat slow processes, due to the fact that it is an old and large company in a field highly regulated and requiring high data protection. New products, projects, ideas can take a very long time to be approved. Mentalities are also sometimes difficult to change because people tend to stay in the company for a very long time and are therefore less keen on changing the way they work.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the focus on employee development high while pushing people to be more empowered to do what they think is right, removing some barriers for implementing new ideas and trusting people with different thinking.

Great company with consistently smart people

Marketing Director (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at American Express as a contractor

ProsSmart colleagues; interesting work; decent pay; clear process to setting goals and measuring success.

ConsProcesses can be wearying when you want to move forward quickly. Some employees (like all companies) care too much for their own advancement (like all companies).

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep hiring good people and work to advance internal employees who will dedicate themselves to the company.

AMEX reward those who work hard.....benefits are great!

Senior Manager (Current Employee)
Brighton, England (UK)

I have been working at American Express full-time for more than 10 years

ProsSalary and benefits are good compared to other jobs in the same area

ConsOne of the cons about working in a global company which sits bang in the middle of the time zones is the long hours!

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior leaders should hold their meetings by telepresence which frees up travel budget therefore allowing more travel to markets you are working with...

Solid company to work for

Manager (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at American Express

ProsPeople here are hard working, knowledeable and friendly, the matrix organisation works well when every one is engaged in a project. The company is very good on listening to staff needs and pays a lot of attention to employee engagement. I've worked for one terrible VP (on maternity leave now thankfully!!!) however general management standards are very good. Work life balance is promoted and management are keen to ensure that people are informed of any news as soon as possible, good location in london for commuters near Victoria station. Overall one of the best companies I've worked for, and I've worked for a few!!!

ConsPay isn't the best to be fair.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you're doing in terms of employee engagement, however you do need to review comps and bens!
