Pay attention to your Merchandisers. They run the company...

Area Supervisor (Current Employee)
Cleveland, OH

I have been working at American Greetings

ProsCompany car and free gas for travel anywhere/anytime. And it is truly free. Benefits are ok but you get vacation time from the start - 2 weeks. Running your own territory from your home office. YOur boss isnt (always) looking right over your shoulder. For the most part you run your own territory and manage your employees. Set your own hours, just get the work done. Which means you will be working alot.

ConsYou can set your own hours, but there is always too much to do. Information from World Headquarters is sometimes slow trickling down to the field. My merchandisers will tell me about a new program shipped to them before I know about it. AS do not have real selling responsibilites and have to defer to the Account Exec at headquarters to make needed changes in account at times. That takes time and frustration. Depends on your DM how involved they are in your day to day functions. The previous DM did not realize that the AS I replaced had basically stopped working for the prevous year. My current Dm though micromanages and has driven a few veteran (20+ yr) AS's to early retirement. It all depends. AG will send you to the field to work anwhere in the country with no regard to personal preference or hardships of being comletely alone in a new place/city/state. Some people have a hard time with that.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the merchandisers. They are the backbone of this company and most have been doing it for longer than you. We need them to make the ideas you have come to fruition, and paying them minimum wage and arguing about their store preferences and how they dont matter will not get you ahead.

Has the potential to be so much more -but isn't.

Senior Graphic Designer (Current Employee)
Cleveland, OH

I have been working at American Greetings

ProsI really like the work that I do.

ConsSenior management is incompetent and they tend to hire other incompetent managers from the top down.
Senior management is overpaid as they are brought in with high salaries, but do not have to be accountable. No incentives for them to make a positive difference as they have their big salaries. American Greetings ownership believe dollars bring in top senior management. Has not show to be the case. They take the money for their 3-5 year contracts and then leave. A lot of other competent people could perform these management jobs for a lot less that are good and hard workers-and be offered incentive packages if they reach certain goals. There is a lost of dead weight not only in management but in non management positions. However, during downsizing, good workers are often cut by incompetent management as they are unaware of the value and skill level of their staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo many unqualified managers and too little people to do the work. Thus sub par product.

Company has changed

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at American Greetings full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe Benifits and pay used to be good for management personnel.
Hours in the field used to be flexible that you could start your day anytime in the morning.

ConsThe company is looking to do everything on the cheap. Pay for new people. There are also are cutting personnel in all areas and increase work load up to 30%. People have gone from 50 to 60 plus hours a week. Senior personnel are being shown the door because of salaries. You are told you just do not fit the model any more. They can say it to anyone because expectation are set extremely high with not enough tools or help to get the job done. This is being done to people that have 10-30 years of service.

Advice to Senior ManagementWill the last one to leave shut off the lights.

Totally use and abuse merchandisers, the backbone of the company.

Lack of managerial support doomed my success with the company

PTM (Former Employee)

I worked at American Greetings part-time for less than a year

ProsFlexibility in planning schedule
Reasonable hourly pay
Developed good working relationships with stores serviced as accounts

ConsPromises not delivered regarding assistance from management when needed
Assignment of accounts not made in the best interest of the employee and company
Lack of information and answers to concerns of any issues-email responses slow at best
Expectations of the same job performance level from new employees and those who had worked with company for several years

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide all of the support and resources needed to your PTM employees to insure success. Be realistic in terms of expectations of new employees vs seasoned ones. Make the changes needed and don't depend on computer training to do the job of hands on training.

Shrinking business with risk adverse management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at American Greetings full-time for more than 5 years

Pros-Diverse work environment--first place I worked where it's not unusual to pass dogs when walking down the hallways.
-Given the opportunity to move to new/different jobs

Cons-Shrinking business - constant downsizing, limits ability to advance
-Can't hold employees accountable because priorities/projects change so quickly it's difficult/impossible to complete a task before you have to change direction again
-too many "officers" for a company it's size--which inflates costs

Advice to Senior ManagementYou like to say the right things but you don't do the right things. Understanding a business is not the same as leading/running a company. Consider hiring Sr Management that know how to lead and run a company.

Good only for a stepping stone to a better job

PT Merchandiser (Former Employee)

I worked at American Greetings

ProsPay is ok.
Excellent way to network in order to find a more stable position.

ConsThey do not give enough time for the work expected. You are supposed to charge every phone call, e-mail or discussion you have about work but if you do you will have less time to actually work the store. Supervisors know it's too little time yet pressure you to "somehow" get it done.

They tell you it's a flexible schedule but then start putting other scheduling expectations on you. You must schedule your calls on the day your order delivers. You find out that specific stores only want you there on certain days or certain times.

Your schedule does not load until the day before the week begins. It's difficult to make any personal plans.

There is an expectation that you carry a cell phone yet they won't reimburse you. I finally told them I wasn't going to carry my cell phone at work anymore. In fact you must use your own cell phone, internet service, land line AND buy your own packing tape and office supplies etc. if needed.

You aren't given a mileage reimbursement, they give you travel time between stores but not to your first store or your trip home. There are times I had only one service call for an hour. That meant that I received no travel time. My pay for the day basically paid for the gas to get there.

There is no consistency in your schedule. One week you might have 20 hours, the next 5.

Advice to Senior ManagementAll managers should have to work at a store for a few weeks to understand how important the merchandisers are to the company. Give us realistic expectations to avoid high turnover.
