I worked at American Greetings full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

As an Area Supervisor, you are able to make your own schedule based on demands in your assigned territory. Company car that is provided to use for business as well as personal. Great experience gained with recruiting, hiring and creating client relationships.

    Cons

There is no such thing as a work-life balance if you are in a territory with high turn over. You are in a field management role so you only communicate with coworkers via email or phone call. It does get lonesome at times. You will bring work home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More benefits or perks for part time merchandisers. Without them there would be no AG.

I worked at American Greetings part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Ability to work on your time, decent pay for part-time

    Cons

Not enough hours to complete work sometimes, Every other week not enough hours to make it worth working. Sometimes 3 hours for that week. Lots of product that is old under cabinets as back stock. Some product takes forever to come in. Too much merchandise in some stores. No Health benefits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not to have Favoritism toward select employees, Get rid of old merchandise that doesn't sale.

    Pros

    Cons

the bosses up top have no idea how to keep up with technology or how to accept that someone working under them understands the world. Egos abound

    Pros

Fantastic people, unbelievable talent in the building. There is all sorts of resources that can help the creative department that just aren't available to most companies.

    Cons

Corporate structure and antiquated systems stifle any chance at opportunities that are presented in the retail market. Any firm decisions take months and dozens of meetings with little accomplished at the end. The simplest requests for changes and any process improvements require months of negotiations with multiple departments with very little accomplished for the effort expended.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your managers, update systems to move products/processes quicker. Streamline meetings to get away from "American Meetings" and back to American Greetings.

I worked at American Greetings part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

a supportive area supervisor, good training, and schedule flexibility.

    Cons

The one thing I disliked most about working for AG was how much paper was being thrown away--by my hand. After major holidays like Christmas and Easter, there was always a heavy amount of cards still left to be sold. Instead of donating the cards, or sending them off to be either recycled or reused the following year, I was told by my supervisor that they all needed to go in the trash. After several years of this, I could no longer take the blatant disregard for environmental responsibility.

I think it is safe to say if there was a method in place for excess cards, I would still be working with AG.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

please do something about the amount of seasonal cards you send. Also, try more eco-friendly approaches to excess card disposal.

    I worked at American Greetings

    Pros

Easy work. There are good people to work with who have been there for years.

    Cons

Hot inside building. Supervisors do not listen or help when there is a problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your workers. Get the drama out of the workplace. Happy workers means more production.

I have been working at American Greetings

    Pros

flexibility, working alone, trainers are available and helpful

    Cons

    holiday work
    low pay
can involve deadlines and long hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

fair and equal pay - some ptms are more dedicated and work much harder and others make way more money and don't work as hard?

I worked at American Greetings full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

AG had a very relaxed work environment. Though morale dropped from the earlier days, the company still made basic overtures at keeping employees happy sheep, such as monthly potluck dinners. The location was close to home, and the absentee policy was lax at the time, although it seems to have changed since I left.

    Cons

The work itself was extremely boring. Like any workplace, some of the people were difficult and the rest were painfully ignorant at times. The day I left was like a scene from An Officer and a Gentleman, minus the man carrying me out, celebratory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't give frozen turkeys as Christmas bonuses. The jokes about "giving employees the bird" were tiresome and uninspired.

A lot of nice, talented people. Amazingly talented people. Competetive pay.

    Cons

Creative management strategy is severely misguided.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To Creative: Focus on utilizing your people to the best of their abilities. Stop with the incessant data entry and let them do what they do best: make you money by being creative.
