Current Employee - Merchandiser in Fort Worth, TX

I have been working at American Greetings part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Independent Working environment, received job assignment via company website
    Go do the work
Very minimal contact with AG management after a brief training period
    Very flexible hours

    Cons

Part Time positions only --- sometimes not enough hours though it is based on seasonal demand.

Pay 8.00 an hour not the greatest sometimes considering mileage to drive to accounts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer some full time positions i.e. 40 hrs
The job is physically demanding, upping the pay scale a bit would be great.
12.00 would be a good wage to consider as the cost of fuel vs hours worked its a wash or break even

Former Employee - PTO-Power Truck Op in Afton, TN

I worked at American Greetings full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great employees to work with. Laid back environment. People work as a team without haveing management shoving teamwork down your throat. It isn't required to work as a team but we did anyways.

    Cons

Union Plant so the people who have been there for years don't do anything. The union allows employees that don't pull their weight to stay on without consequences. This is killing the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to properly train employees. Find a way to get rid of the employees that have been there for years that don't do anything. I understand if they are still doing the job but when they expect a newer employee to do their job as well as their own you are paying two people when you should be paying one. This is a major problem and needs to be corrected.

I have been working at American Greetings

    Pros

    Flexible hours
    no micromanagement, to a point
    pay is decent
    some really sharp/talented co-workers
everyone is likable for the most part
    great work/life balance
easy commute, as long as you live on the west side

    Cons

    - management is severely inconsistent in it's practices and attitude
    - sometimes you will run across an extremely effective manager, and sometimes the polar opposite, it depends on who walks through the door that day
    - impractical deadlines bordering on the impossible if you don't manage them yourself and possess the forethought to start work on something before it comes to managements attention
    - there is very little information sharing between departments, no one plays for the same team at AG

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - promote communication between departments and teams within departments
    - recognize talent when you see it and work to cultivate that talent
    - properly train your managers to manage, and be consistent about it
    - recognize problem employees, work to correct their behavior, or fire them and replace them. There is way to much dead weight at American Greetings.

    I worked at American Greetings

    Pros

Recognition for accomplishments and goals reached from upper management and department heads. Excellent benefits package and a fair salary for a National Account Manager.

    Cons

Slow to move on decision making relating to account management and sales related activities. Layoffs were always a concern toward the end of fiscal year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees more like family and less like a number, lose to GE mentality of cutting the bottom 10% each year.
