I worked at American Heart Association

    Pros

Co-workers were supportive. Mission centered, great focus with Health departments.

    Cons

More training for Advocacy in the western area. The supervisor is hands off but when somethings goes wrong he is quick to blame. He will never say it to your face, you'll learn from others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your employees.

    Pros

Great mission, great cause, great volunteers and survivors. Good online training and sales training.

    Cons

Management never considers the circumstances, never motivates, never looks at how a real comoany manages and won't try new things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your next level down. Look outside your walls for better ways to manage...

I have been working at American Heart Association full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, flexible work schedule, generous PTO/holidays. Great mission and dedicated volunteers. Women in top leadership roles.

    Cons

Power plays, territorial, disrespect of people's expertise as professionals, a lot of back biting and politics to be seen and get ahead. Not a lot of opportunities for advancement. Pay is good for nonprofit, but not competitive in market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better training for managers. Consider a person's ability to work with people before promoting him/her to leadership role.

I worked at American Heart Association full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Lively, Fun, Very professional organization, great branding, great mission, very health conscious, excellent health insurance with 401K and company retirement plan.

    Cons

Too much nepotism at local level, not very diverse, fundraising trumps mission frequently, local fundraisers do not embrace multiculturalism well and frequently fail to recommend minorities for higher level volunteer boards unless thousands of dollars are donated

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require Market Directors to switch markets after a set number of years and multiculturalism and diversity must also be sincerely embraced by the Regional VP.

I have been working at American Heart Association full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The AHA has some incredible volunteers and donors. Unfortunately the culture does not promote stewarding and cultivating them properly.

    Cons

The AHA is a high pressure sales environment that has lost touch with the mission. If you are looking for the warm and fuzzies, this is NOT the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk about the mission more and put more of an emphasis on the people than the money.
