    Pros

Very fun and laid back work environment. Great upper level researchers serve as mentors that mold new employees into quality researchers in the field as well.

You will very rarely complete a project in the budgeted time allotted to you and overtime pay is very rarely available.

I worked at American Institutes for Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

AIR is interested in growing employees, so the opportunity for professional development is offered a lot. It's a great place to learn the research ropes, increase skills, and gain experience that can translate into many different areas and types of research. Colleagues are generally intelligent, competent, and passionate about the work. Excellent health and vision benefits.

    Cons

Office culture varies at the different office locations, so navigating that is tricky at times. Depending on your manager, work life balance can be hard. Promotions and pay raises only happen once a year.

    Advice to Management

Employees shouldn't learn new "issues" with their work during review time. Management should be giving feedback and coaching throughout the year to offer employees the opportunity to correct/improve weaker areas.

I have been working at American Institutes for Research full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Ethical, smart colleagues Lots of opportunities for training and learning Great office space in DC right on Georgetown waterfront The company cares about employees and professional growth and development

    Cons

It is sometimes difficult to manage a work/ life balance particularly during "proposal season." Staff need to set personal boundaries about how much you are willing to work because there will always be more to do.

    Advice to Management

Invest in leadership training/ public speaking training for employees.

I have been working at American Institutes for Research full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The work varies and is interesting. Junior staff can be counted on and are bright. Some senior staff are brilliant and innovative. It is an organization with high expectations--which makes for interesting and innovative project work. I feel well paid for what I do. The environment is flexible as well.

    Cons

I often work extra hours--around 5 to 10 extra a week. Some staff could be working at a higher/more professional level.

    Advice to Management

Streamline some of the activities to reduce administrative burden.

I worked at American Institutes for Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Many social events throughout the year Good paid time off schedule Wonderful office location ( The HQ ) Small gym with showers, etc ( The HQ ) Very cheap parking Comparatively cheap medical / dental benefits Relaxed dress code Young staff environment Sports teams

    Cons

The department and time I was at AIR allowed me to advance quickly and work on and learn new things often. However from my co-workers I know other areas of the company it was very hard to get promoted or a raise, and that they were over-stressed and worked. I can say as a whole the company provided me a very positive experience, but for others I understand and can agree with their complaints of departments that I did not work in.

    Advice to Management

Work on employee retention by treating junior staff better, ensuring the workload is not overwhelming, and giving their managers training on how to develop their employees.

    Pros

AIR cares about their employees, offer great benefits, and depending on the department a fun place to work. Would recommend.

    Cons

Some departments can be very work heavy during certain parts of the year. Can be difficult to career progress.

    Advice to Management

In order to keep good, young talent, there needs to be more opportunities to for them to grow their experience and careers in the first 1 to 1.5 years
