I have been working at American Public University System full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

APUS was an excellent employer whom I felt worked just as hard for me as I did for them as an employee. I was able to thrive and create my own path to achieve my goals. Departments are very open to working together and mission driven to support the University's student first mission. I have also never met a more passionate group of HR staff than those that I worked with frequently. Just like any other business there are frustrations but everyone was always open to work through those to support the students. I would easily recommend this organization to anyone that I know with confidence.

    Cons

Improvement needed with open communication from leadership to both front-line and management

I worked at American Public University System full-time

    Pros

Compared to other organizations, this is truly an "employee-friendly" environment. The HR leadership looks at their roles as advisors. In doing so, they establish a place at the "table" by partnering with all levels of management across department lines. The HR leadership also recognizes the need (at times) to advocate for employees that are unable to provide a voice of their own. This was a cultivating environment in my opinion and I was able to find my career path thanks to this HR team. I am truly honored to have worked with such great people.

    Cons

Hard to find the proper balance between work and life; work often continued past the 5 o'clock hour (more personal preference at the time than a standard)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose the ability to get feedback from those employees "in the trenches". Their insight is invaluable to the organization.

I have been working at American Public University System

    Pros

Solid support for new instructors to their environment. They are constantly striving for improvement of the courses and adding interactive content. The full time faculty respond quickly to inquiries from instructors on any issues. Actually get feedback when students provide positive feedback on a course and the instructor. There are regular conference call meetings for all staff to attend for updates and to clarify questions.

    Cons

There is a little mis-communication when it comes to who is in charge of a specific course as far as a course lead.

I have been working at American Public University System part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The students that you work with are usually adult students and very motivate. A lot of active and former military which makes it even better. The online learning environment is solid and they actually use suggestions for improvement. They seem to be expanding the programs that are in demand which should support future growth. I'm hoping this adjunct position will grow into a possible full time position...

    Cons

Some initial confusion when starting classes for the first time, a little better communication from course leads would help when starting out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the push for expanding growing fields like cyber security...

I have been working at American Public University System as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

Telework. Respect. Good pay for the work. After I started working at 3 other schools, I realized how good APUS / AMU is. They are more like an on-ground school than the 'other' schools I work for.

    Cons

Difficult to get promoted - "good ole boys network"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Include the instructional staff in more meetings; be more transparent about policies.

I have been working at American Public University System full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They offer good compensation in regards to salary, the benefits are amazing. The benefits consist of 401K, free education for employees, wellness programs, fitness center (Charles Town, WV), easy commute, flexible work schedule with some telecommuting options depending on your position. Plus the usual medical, dental, vision. I am sure I am missing something but you get the point.

    Cons

Every company has it's cons. For this company it is growing pains. In the recession, they have done well and will continue to do well. However, they have to be careful of not growing too fast and too big.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, the company is headed in the right direction.

I have been working at American Public University System

    Pros

    -Good starting pay
    -Decent benefits
    -Great growth opportunities

    Cons

-Job functions can be kind of blurry
-Sometimes a little overly bureaucratic for such a dynamic industry

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are doing. Apus is a organization with an excellent business model. It seems that I am very lucky to be working at APUS. It would be cool if some of the job titles matched other companies titles (Student Accounts instead of Accounts Receivable).

I worked at American Public University System full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Enjoyed the challenge of my work at this company, as well as the collaborative environment between teams. Management was invested in my success, and provided numerous development opportunities. I was encouraged to think outside the box, and felt my ideas were valued. Love the mission, and the opportunities that I was helping to provide to students.

    Cons

I was overall very satisfied with the company, but because it is a relatively small company, advancement opportunities can be limited. With that said, development within your position is encouraged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the employee engagement!

    Pros

Management will give you all you need to succeed in your career. Meet interesting people and have the opportunity to further your education.

    Cons

I was located at a remote campus and not at the main campus. This is hard when trying to build teams to work with everyday.

I have been working at American Public University System

    Pros

I enjoy working here because I am surrounded by supporting, collaborative managers and employees that take the time to work with you on achieving your goals and overcoming your challenges. We're a growing University so there's a lot to keep you busy, but everyone keeps their cool and is civil.

I've experienced great opportunities to grow my skills and expand my responsibilities.

    Cons

APEI is located in Manassas, Virginia, which is not exactly the greatest hotspot. So it's tough to find a decent place to eat lunch. Our other office is in West Virginia, so traveling between the too can be a bit of a burden, taking about an hour.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, and thanks for creating a great work environment.
