I worked at American Superconductor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a highly technical company that has survived for a long time by diversifying into the wind energy business which is supposed to support the superconductor business.

    Cons

The superconductor business has been waiting for decades to take off - always technology of the future. Stock price plunged in 2011 and has not recovered since.

    Advice to Management

    Diversify customer base

    Pros

    Great people to work with.

    Cons

The executive level management is a joke and all they care about there money and stock options. Could (Would) be a great company without them.

    Advice to Management

Fire CEO and revamp upper management

I have been working at American Superconductor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great technology and solutions which could truly change the world. Truly brilliant and visionary engineers with a passion for what they do

    Cons

Where to start? Terrible senior management who will bankrupt the company Allowed the company's golden goose to be stolen Interested in keeping Wall Street happy Has zero concern for employees Treats employees as expendable and makes sure they know it Numerous ethical obstacles

    Advice to Management

Sell the company to someone competent Try to fulfill your mission Realize your time has passed

I have been working at American Superconductor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people, casual work environment. Benefits are OK. They do pay people pretty well. But in order to get people to stay through the kind of collapse we have here now, they must pay well.

    Cons

So many layoffs because of the Sinoval debacle that moral is in the toilet. It is completely unknown even to us on the inside whether the company will make it.

    Advice to Management

Stop flying every executive all around the world in non-stop fashion instead of laying off more people next time

  7. Poorly run company with out of touch management.

I worked at American Superconductor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay was competitive with the market but don't expect advancement.

    Cons

Don't expect to make a difference or to have a management team that cares about the shareholders, customers or employees. One bad decision after another and poor product quality is the death toll for them.

    Advice to Management

The Board needs to wake up and do what's right for the shareholders by replacing the entire management team. Also, continually suing their customers or being sued is a bad strategy.

  8. Helpful (1)

Very poorly managed company with lots of hidden agenda at the top and very poor leadership (none).

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Independent of what you do and how bad you contribute, as long as you know the right person at the top you are fine. You dance to the music from the top you are safe.

    Cons

There is NO leadership There is NO vision The so called leadership does not have a clue for the contributions that makes the goals met. Very sad place

    Advice to Management

Walk the talk You need to first identify who are the true leaders. You have not demonstrated to the working employees that you know this. Do not rely on those incompetant (in your terms) leadership. At the end of the day you need to be competent enough to pick the right leaders not those who tell you what you want to hear to safeguard their jobs and their agendas.
