I have been working at American Tower as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Friendly and fast pace work environment. As a contractor pay was above average.

    Cons

Undefined processes due to the work load. Management increased personnel without defining processes to be successful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review resources and utilize all resources to fullest potential including contractors.

I worked at American Tower full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good - decent vacation time, excellent 401k matching, great short term disability policy

    Cons

From a creative standpoint you're told to "think outside the box" but then when you do, you're told it's "too weird" and you basically do the same thing over and over again

    Cons

    Being contractor

I have been working at American Tower

    Pros

Well established business, a lot of departments, lateral movement could be possible, not too far of a commute from Boston if necessary

    Cons

Human Resources department is slow, people can sometimes be secretive, pay or salary probably is not the best around

I worked at American Tower as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

The building is absolutely beautiful. The management is very friendly, Great contract pay, amenities like Gym and great Cafeteria were provided. As for the work itself it was really interesting and I loved doing it.

    Cons

SUPER clique-y. If you don't fit in with these folks you will fail. I guess I was too much of a laid back New Hampshire person to fit in with the (what felt like) rough around the edges, unwelcoming feeling that reminded me of High School...

Regardless I was super friendly with everyone, did my job, even got reports back about what a great job I was doing. I expressed interest to my manager that I would love to apply to the open position that was available. And one week later I was dropped 3 months early from my contract.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is really a great company with vision, integrity, and values.... but please for the love of humanity get rid of the childish cliques.... but that won't happen since the core of the cliques come from management.. Sigh.

I have been working at American Tower full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Comp and benefits are above average. Lots of opportunities for employee to self educate due to an extensive development center. Very fast-paced environment with a lot of high talent and very personable people. Some teams really know how to promote from within and encourage employee development and career growth. Others don't.

    Cons

Leading by example is missing. Can't get time off. I mean, there is time off, but you can't enjoy it as no one disconnects. The downside of a fast-paced environment and a big missed opportunity to lead by example. They pay well but they extract their pound of flesh.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really listen to your employees and hear what they are and aren't saying. Figure out how to provide a solid work life balance before you start losing talent.

Bureaucratic, division of labor makes no sense, low pay, "busy work", management is ok but could be better

I have been working at American Tower full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, work-life balance, stable company

    Cons

Management has no sense of what motivates employees (at times, they kill motivation), low salaries, promotions take a life time, problem employees get away with a lot because managers do not have the skills to handle them which results in the loss of good employees who are smart enough to move on; IT is a joke; legal department is dysfunctional and it's lawyers do not nothing but complain and talk about each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be wise to recognize you don't know it all and that you could learn to be better managers from those managers below you and by the way, don't steal their ideas without giving them proper credit. Don't let your friendships cloud your judgment about a person's performance. Recognize the stars from the deadweight and let them lead. Put the complainers in their place, not those they complain about. Chances are, they are actually working hard for you! pay people market rates. $ is always a good motivator. Reorganize the IT department from the ground up. Do something with your legal department. They remind me of high school.

I have been working at American Tower

    Pros

Flexibility, Not crazy hours or weekend work, generally people are nice

    Cons

career advancement on each level is very long drawn; salary isn't market

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Being a premier tower company, you should focus on employees equally as shareholders, since the results are driven by the employees.

I worked at American Tower full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The folks at this company really like what they do. That's reflected in the financials. They are going through a complete overhaul so right now may be unstable, but on the whole it's a great company to showcase your skills.

    Cons

If you are looking for the latest and greatest and most cutting edge technology, you won't find it here. With many legacy applications and too much work for the IT staff on hand, there is not a lot of room for brand new applications. The business has unreal expectations of IT given staffing levels. There are a lot of contractors so sometimes feels like the co has a revolving door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assess who the key players are and make sure you hold onto them. Though the apps aren't the most cutting edge, there's some really great opportunities there for talented folks who just want the recognition for the work/ideas they contribute.
