I have been working at American Water full-time

    Pros

My manager is great. He puts up with a lot of junk from lower level employees and still has their best interest at heart. The salary is pretty good, the benefits are excellent and so is the PTO.

    Cons

The employees are ungrateful for what they are given. If they would go and work at a less stable company, with less pay and sub par benefits, maybe they would appreciate their jobs instead of complaining all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hold employees accountable.

Focused on the short term - stock price and dividend growth. Unpleasant culture.

I have been working at American Water full-time

    Pros

The benefits are fair. It is a good place for someone looking gain experience in the water industry.

    Cons

Work-life balance is terrible. The company is solely focused on inflating the stock price and dividend growth. They are reducing head counts and budgets. The remaining employees are left to pick up the slack and work harder. The company discourages overtime unless you're a salaried employee. Then they don't care how late you have to work as long as your work is completed.
It is becoming very difficult to meet our financial goals because they are constantly changing. It is hard to hit a moving target. Our bonuses and increases are shrinking, while the executive team reaps enormous rewards in salary, bonuses, and stock options.
The culture in Indiana is very bad. The feeling of job security does not exist. The vice-president has exhibited clear nepotism in his hiring practices. He uses intimidation as his management style.
The leadership constantly talks about safety but they commit no resources towards it.
There are many behavior/ethics/conduct/human resources policies in place but the company routinely disregards their own written policies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The recent culture survey was a very weak method to gauge employee attitudes. If you really are concerned, then create an anonymous way for employees to share their thoughts. The majority will not share their concerns because they feel like their jobs will be in jeopardy.
    Recruit more qualified managers.

I have been working at American Water full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Competitive salaries, most employees are sincere (excluding management).

    Cons

Where to start.. Abysmal training for new employees. Not a good place to start a career unless you want to be in the utility business until death. Work is done extremely inefficiently with suggestions thrown under the rug. Unrealistic work expectations. Was working all hours of the day and night and had impossible tasks with impossible deadlines.

Management always shifting. In the brief time that i have worked at American Water I have had 4 different managers. None of the managers know how to manage employees, nor do they have the necessary knowledge to run the business.
Many people are leaving as renewed promises to invigorate employees are failing. No motivation to work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

American water is in big trouble considering the fact that most people are nearing retiring age and they cannot retain young talent.

Change the work environment, take employee suggestions to heart, invest in vigorous training for new employees. Anyone with real promise is going to recognize this is a sinking ship and will be running.

    Pros

Hours are great since no one knows how much time employees leave for, especially at lunch time.

    Cons

Hiring is very political and racially motivated

I have been working at American Water full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Salary and benefits are good. The vast majority of people care about the work they are doing. The newer executive members have a much better attitude towards employees and seem to want to change the negative culture. Promotions can take time but are available if you work hard and wait it out.

    Cons

Work/life balance is abysmal. You work as hard, if not harder, than someone at a tech company without the perks. Very high stress environment due to punitive culture. This exists even though there are very few established processes and little training available to prevent issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rather than compare to similar industries, look at the successful Fortune 500 companies for guidance.

I have been working at American Water full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The Health benefits are fairly decent. Overtime is available if you are into that .

    Cons

You are required to agree to work mandated overtime to work there. From that point forget about have two days off a week. You might get one. Lunches use to be a half hour, now they are an hour - MAYBE - if your not required to work half of it as mandatory overtime. Forget about getting off on time - they can hold you up to an hour to. The job is extremely stressful. The new SAP software we're forced to use is pathetic. Managers are nothing but yes-men.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the mandatory overtime program more fair - or get rid of mandated overtime PERIOD. It is the major cause of low morale and turnover in the Illinois and Florida call centers.

I have been working at American Water full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working for a regulated monopoly, the company is pretty stable. There's usually a lot of capital to invest in the infrastructure.

    Cons

While stable, there are time when there is a lot of bloat. At times, that capital investment leads to trying to do too much too fast.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Preach a consistent message

I have been working at American Water full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Benefits are ok, that is truly it. Nothing else to talk about.

    Cons

Company is not on same page. Poor communication. Poor management. Human Resources is horrific. Polices made, never followed. New leaders are needed, this organization is on the down side. I really wish I could say something positive, but there is nothing. Upper managment coming in just to fill their pockets, corporate greed has taken over. So sad for a company at one time was superb. They are trying to make a small company a big company where only management reaps rewards. Worker bees get screwed due to the greed. Managment cliques are just awful, and blackball employees and are only committed to other managment so they support anything they say. I would be very leary working in this environment. It is stressful and there is no empathy with what people are going through. We are now in a reorganization going on, and it is by far the worst corporate reorg people have ever seen or experienced. Those affected are being treated like trash by management. It is a true disgrace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have ruined this company to the enth degree. I really don't think it will ever bounce back. You are not true to your employees or your company. The truth is always covered up and hidden. Employees no longer trust. So many people looking to leave, myself, as well. We are so disappointed. Find some TRUE leaders and not a clique of managers and directors who is ruinning the company into the ground.

I have been working at American Water full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - remote work possible
    - competitive entry level salary
    - new technology

    Cons

    - Work life balance out of sync, vacation time ridiculous, unless you spent 20 years with the company
    - cost cuttings everywhere to balance out higher than estimated costs for new system implementation
    - previous training opportunities were great, however now due to costs, cuts everywhere
    - constant changes within the organization, people are exhausted and just not happy anymore
    - upper management says "open door policy" but they don't act upon it, not listening to employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - listen to employees
    - slow down with changes, organization is change saturated
    - find better ways to keep high performing employees
    - change vacation polices, make it competitive
