I worked at American Water
Pros – The benefits were great, and it was close to my home at the time.
Cons – No chance for advancement, unless you were the chosen few. The same people were the only ones getting promoted.
It didn't matter how qualified or educated and professional your were. I've seen folks with MBA's get passed up by "others" who barley had GED's. They were in the loop.
Advice to Senior Management – Watch your back!!!! American Water has been known to promote you right out the door. I've seen it happen twice. Also, they have changed presidents 6 times in 5 years...hint,hint. Not a good sign.

I worked at American Water
Pros – The building was nice and so were the co-workers. There was ample, free parking available to employees. They ensured access to decent beverages. There was also a very nice healthy solutions program.
Cons – Everything else was horrid: Old, outdated computers. Poor employee communication. The benefits were very expensive and not very good. The work hours were long (8-5). Management was very condescending and secretive. Policies were not implemented uniformly to all employees across the board. In general, not a very good place to grow one's career.
Advice to Senior Management – Transparency in communications would be highly recommended. There are managers who clearly have had zero management training and should not supervise others until training has been completed. Implement more opportunities for work-life balance.
