    I worked at American Water

    Pros

    Good benefits and excellent compensation

    Cons

Changes that are made at the upper management level do not take into consideration the challenges that the front line supervisors and management teams will have to face to implement them. What was once a caring work environment has become hostile.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More honesty with your front line employees

No Respect for Work Life balance in the IT department.

I have been working at American Water

    Pros

If you like wearing many hats within an organization, you will do it here. They pay pretty well and have pretty good benefits.

    Cons

Based on the pro, be ready to have ridiculous timelines to meet when trying to pick up your new responsibilities. They just went through a re-org and cut 40 people. So IT is running extremely thin.

Also, since they pay you fairly well, they think they own all of your time including after hours.. Its more normal to work 60+ hours a week then it isn't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your employees and clean house on the people that don't know what they are doing. You just cut the top performers in IT. I hope you find a new group of good talent to help you as you move on.

I worked at American Water full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Nationwide career movement. Career advancement. Good safety training. Pay is pretty good. Have new vehicles for the field workers to drive.

    Cons

Decisions are made by someone hours and hours away who has never done your job. They micromanage...you have to detail every minute of your day. They hold grudges

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Loosen the tie and give the workers more freedom.

Focused on the short term - stock price and dividend growth. Unpleasant culture.

I have been working at American Water full-time

    Pros

The benefits are fair. It is a good place for someone looking gain experience in the water industry.

    Cons

Work-life balance is terrible. The company is solely focused on inflating the stock price and dividend growth. They are reducing head counts and budgets. The remaining employees are left to pick up the slack and work harder. The company discourages overtime unless you're a salaried employee. Then they don't care how late you have to work as long as your work is completed.
It is becoming very difficult to meet our financial goals because they are constantly changing. It is hard to hit a moving target. Our bonuses and increases are shrinking, while the executive team reaps enormous rewards in salary, bonuses, and stock options.
The culture in Indiana is very bad. The feeling of job security does not exist. The vice-president has exhibited clear nepotism in his hiring practices. He uses intimidation as his management style.
The leadership constantly talks about safety but they commit no resources towards it.
There are many behavior/ethics/conduct/human resources policies in place but the company routinely disregards their own written policies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The recent culture survey was a very weak method to gauge employee attitudes. If you really are concerned, then create an anonymous way for employees to share their thoughts. The majority will not share their concerns because they feel like their jobs will be in jeopardy.
    Recruit more qualified managers.

    Pros

Provides good service to customers due to the commitment and focus of its operating personnel

    Cons

Single key individuals have a a very narrow view on leadership and everyone must meet that mold. In addition some key leaders completely lack knowledge of what is happening in the real world of the company's operations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up before you lose all of your experts that keep the company running.

    Pros

    - remote work possible
    - competitive entry level salary
    - new technology

    Cons

    - Work life balance out of sync, vacation time ridiculous, unless you spent 20 years with the company
    - cost cuttings everywhere to balance out higher than estimated costs for new system implementation
    - previous training opportunities were great, however now due to costs, cuts everywhere
    - constant changes within the organization, people are exhausted and just not happy anymore
    - upper management says "open door policy" but they don't act upon it, not listening to employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - listen to employees
    - slow down with changes, organization is change saturated
    - find better ways to keep high performing employees

    Pros

Easy commute in southern New Jersey
Top corporate management seems to be trying to move the company in the right direction

    Cons

    Career advancement opportunities
Unreasonable expectations from a truly workaholic boss, especially considering the compensation (I'm planning to leave.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at American Water full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Benefits
    Nice Work Area
    Reasonable Pay
    PTO
    Close To Home

    Cons

    Horrible Performance Appraisal Proccess
    Favoritism
    Constant Reorganization
Not Sympathetic To The Fact You Are A Person and Have a Family

I advanced in the company very quickly, when I became one of the higher paid team supervisors management used this against me telling me I was paid too much and needed to work harder. The constant reorganization of the company had me sick every day with fear that I would be booted out. Management uses HR as a scare tactic, honestly I have never trusted another HR person since working here. Due to reorg management changes all the time and the real focus (the customer) is lost. Save your sanity and don't work here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit scaring employees with reorgs and HR. Quit promoting the wrong people based on hearsay from managers. You have lost many many good supervisors just because they "pissed off a manager". Management by fear won't retain your good employees

Former Employee - Customer Service Representative III - PA in Pensacola, FL

I worked at American Water full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great money for entry level positions in the area, generally pleasant co-workers, nice building and better equipment than most of the call centers with which I have been employed, union available, metrics attainable for employees with drive to succeed.

    Cons

Inconsistent management, policy applied in an inappropriately discretionary manner, overwhelming amounts mandatory overtime with no regard to family obligations outside of normally scheduled shift, employees treated as replaceable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees who are dedicated and perform well should not be penalized for being unable to work excessive overtime outside of the shifts they selected. Employees are already subjected to shift bids based on seniority and must find shifts that they can manage thier lives around. Shifts are selected to best fit the employees schedules and random changes are not easy to manage. Also, termination of and employee for a single mistake that has otherwise performed well is ludicrous. The disciplinary procedure for attendance is well thought out, aside from the overtime issue, but otherwise the disciplinary procedure is either completely lax or grossly excessive. Employees can quit and come back without issue, but the effort to keep a good employee is minimal at best.
