I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Ameriprise supports a culture of collaboration, informal networking and due diligence to advance clients' best interests. There is a ready willingness to listen to new ideas, incorporate proven innovations from leading practices and evaluate continuous improvement efforts against measurable performance goals and objectives.

    Cons

Incorporating networking into your daily job is essential, and challenging due to ongoing work loads, given the long-term relationships that drive operational activities across lines of business.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great training programs for systems and customer service from the home office. In the 21st century with their technology, many clients are tech savvy and appreciate this.

    Cons

I worked in a branch and therefore was never able to visit the home office in MN. Would have liked to had assigned people in the home office that took care of our branch as opposed to getting a new person every time we had to call for assistance.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time

    Pros

    Benefits are outstanding.

    Cons

Company has strong ethical values, and makes certain these core values are exhibited in employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Culture is a roadblock to success. Change the culture, and be more successful.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

A great variety of tasks and responsibilities each day, great work/life balance, a very professional work environment, some training opportunities, and access to great research and trading platform.

    Cons

Limited career advancement, few benefits, a sales company- so if you don't like sales this career/company is not for you. Ameriprise always seems to be a few steps behind regarding technology.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Fortune 500 company with over 100 years experience and the most CFPs in the industry. Investing large sums in advertising and latest technology. Great training in latests producs and services as well as how to manage your own financial planning practice. You create equity in your business which you may be able to sell at a future stage.

    Cons

While improving and expanding its offerings of 3rd party insurance & annuities products, still has a limited range of vehicles in these areas. Very little marketing help. Not producing warm leads for advisors to call. To get top payout rate, you have to produce an insane amount of GDC and the annual "Grid" benchmarks are always moving higher. There is oviously an advisor income squeeze going on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in generating warn leads like Request for Consultation leads (RFC).

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

It is a culturally diverse and people-oriented environment. There is a lot of activity around personal development, recognizing individual and team achievements and good communication throughout all levels.

    Cons

Succession planning should be an area of focus.Tenured employees need to have a plan and mechanism for passing on knowledge and information that may not be documented anywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While continuing to make difficult decsions around expense reductions, streamlining or offshoring business processes, consolidating business units and/or reducting staff, please consider the strengths, talents and skill sets of those that may be let go as a result of a business transformation initiative. There may be value in retaining the high performers rather than losing them to a competitor.

I have been working at Ameriprise

    Pros

Very good benefits, vacation allotments, 401(k), etc. Cooperative and friendly workplace for the most part. Lots of freedom to move around within the organization, get new experiences and job skills.

    Cons

The company is operating in a less transparent way than they used to. No one knows when employees leave the company or move to a different department. All of that is held very close. One day you have a good contact in another area and the next day the cubicle is empty. Not good for morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do more listening to people about the quality of leadership in the mid- to high-level management (Directors, VPs). Most are excellent, but some are downright awful.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Many opportunities for growth within the home office
    - Great benefits and time off
    - Nice 401k matching program
    - Good work life balance culture within the company
    - The company rewards performance, bonuses at most job levels.

    Cons

    - High management turnover & multiple reorganizations made the work environment unnecessarily stress-full at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn from your mistakes, don't repeat them.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than a year

    Pros

great benefits, work and life balance is respected for the most part (vacations and sick time are sacred), they are really trying to develop their brokerage area, most managers are down to earth and have an open door policy.

    Cons

They claim to be different from wire houses, but they enable disrespectful behavior from successful advisors; upper management is afraid of top producers. Lack of brokerage experience allows them to turn the other cheek with common compliance issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top advisors should not have the last word. You are leaving yourself open to HR nightmares and lawsuits by allowing the big egos in the room run your business.
