I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent pay and benefits and awards of Bonus and stocks every year.

    Cons

High stress environment where competition is overtly promoted and the company will lay-off/RIF staff to increase profit. Company actively moving production overseas to avoid taxes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop moving operations overseas and invest more in American operations and staff.

  2.

Good company that has put too much short-term emphasis on cutting costs (below-VP-level employees). Best days are OVER.

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Compensation is good for Fortune 500 company.

    Cons

Long days, high job demands, CHURN!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a longer term view of your most valuable assets: PEOPLE!

  3.

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Benefits and pay are good. Campus is beautiful. Gym is nice.

    Cons

Politics, people who have been there for a long time are spoiled and don't realize they have a good job. Some work very hard, others don't because they are management favorites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much LMS training. More communication on business outlook. Don't give as much notice to employees with lay offs because no one works when they hear of lay offs coming.

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Lots of paid holidays, vacation days, and a great 401k

    Cons

Management consists of young MBA types that are afraid of saying anything but yes. Through layoff after layoff, more work gets piled on and more useless contractors come on board.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit and bring back the old management. Oh, and dig up your old copy of the Amgen values.

    I worked at Amgen

    Pros

Company's mission to support those grievously ill is important ... the products really help patients.

    Cons

People insensitivity - little to no investment in human capital of any substance. very hierarchical

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Announce staff reductions - do it and get it over with. The anxiety is tough on everyone

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Benefits and compensation are excellent. Great work/life balance. Flexible schedule. The campus is beautiful. I've met some really intelligent and humble people here.

    Cons

If you are motivated and want to make a difference go somewhere else. This is where people go to be told what to do. If you want to coast on neutral this is the place. Also if you are in your 20's you will be lonely here. Thousand Oaks is no biotech hub.

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Amazing, extremely intelligent people who are so willing to help you succeed. It's too bad that upper management doesn't share the same idea.

    Cons

You are not safe, ever. A layoff could be right around the corner. The leadership is a little lacking, at least in my department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less time in meetings and more time with your subordinates.

I worked at Amgen as a contractor for more than 5 years

    Pros

Excellent ethic and mission. Consumer orientation and product safety is top-notch.

    Cons

Poor job security. Considerable turnover and frequent downsizing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Like many large corporate entities, planning is too short term and cash driven.

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Pay and benefits are excellent
    Having Amgen on your resume
Thousand Oaks is a nice town
Lots of job openings, and can move around

    Cons

Bloated with too many middle managers, executive directors and directors.
Everyone passes the buck and not many try to simply get the job done.
Everyone spends way too much time putting together slide decks and going to meetings.
Thousand Oaks is a boring town.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try going more toward a matrix structure, and eliminating middle managers. Big pharma companies are much less bureaucratic than Amgen. Your scientific brilliance and excellence are drowning in slide decks, meetings, and favoritism.
