I have been working at Anadarko Petroleum full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

9/80 schedule, your own office, onsite gym, Huge holiday party, vanpool from all over Houston, competitive pay

    Cons

Used to be a good ole boy kinda place, mostly gone, some remnants remain. Job board is not always open process. Some individuals able to game system and do very little while moving around and getting promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be even more transparent. Identify strong performers and reward them. Eliminate favoritism and really use the job board. Have the job board show the manager the hire would move into. Show results of who was hired to show and reflect values. Change the rating system. Hiring people you think are excellent and then call everyone average.

    Pros

Very good work-life balance and benefits. Responsibility given at a young age and experience. Quality staff around you. Strong company values. Good bonus program.

    Cons

Training can sometimes be up to the employee. Cost saving can sometimes hinder individual progress. Culture of not confronting a team or employee when found at fault. HR department will always favor a senior employee/manager in case of a dispute.

I worked at Anadarko Petroleum full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great salary, bonuses, benefits, etc. I really like how they combine vacation and sick into paid time off (PTO), so that all can take advantage or get paid for not using time off. They also have two bonus programs, a 401K match, and a retirement plan.

    Cons

Anadarko is getting to be such a large corporation that you can get pigeon holed into your specific skill set. They tend to promote based on age rather than performance, and they never get rid of anyone, regardless of whether or not they are productive. In addition, the cultures between Denver and The Woodlands are completely different, which makes it challenging at times. Denver employees are much less likely to be promoted than employees in The Woodlands.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the culture by promoting for performance, not age or location. Poor performers should receive poor performance reviews, otherwise the company will continue to retain unproductive life-time employees. Also, give notice to employees who are not petroleum engineers that attended A&M.

    Pros

Lots of Pros here, ease of access to location, benefits, work/life balance, bonus structure, co-workers are friendly with a family atmosphere.

    Cons

Can get stuck in one position. This is your box and don't step out the line type of mentality. Only reason I left was after years of trying to learn new things but they wouldn't let me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust in you staff, let them grow and leave to other groups if they show the willingness and drive.

I have been working at Anadarko Petroleum full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Anadarko has wonderful employees that are willing to help each other to get the job done quickly and effectively. We have great bonuses, benefits, PTO and tons of wonderful volunteer opportunities. Our 9/80 schedule allows for more free time which helps balance work and home life. Though the job can be demanding and stressful at times, I find that the time I spend with my coworkers and the results we achieve as a team make the stressful times worth it.

    Cons

Some department managers are stuck in the boys’ club mentality. If you are from the younger generation and are a woman, working in one of these departments means you have to prove yourself more. Having a tough skin will be necessary and you will need to advocate for yourself much more than you would in other departments. I want to stress that not all departments are like this. Many departments are run by men and women who have taken a progressive and proactive approach to managing and assessing the talent within their teams. I do feel it's necessary to point out that one of the cons of working at the company is the boys’ club mentality that still lingers in some departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotions and raises should be based on merit and the quality of work performed by employees. Career opportunities should be shared and all qualified employees should be considered. The younger generations should be seen as just as competent and talented as the older generation. I work for a great company that I would like to see grow into a fantastic company. I believe that upper management does a great job of keeping employees informed about corporate standings and future plans. I would like to also know that they are aware of how the individual departments are functioning and work to improve long standing issues.

I have been working at Anadarko Petroleum as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good informative rotation and friendly people. Challenging both positive tasks to complete. A good program for students and new hired fresh graduates.

    Cons

Challenging tasks and high expectations on the assignments. Busy people around, sometimes interns need to learn and search by themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More developed internship program.Other than that, it is great.
