Not sure management has a clue what is going on.

ProsThe teamwork resulting from a mutual hatred of being beaten down on a regular basis. Good people that are hard to keep.

ConsThe top down management mentality that senior management holds a "station" within the company permiates the rest of the organization leaving the rest of the workforce dismayed. With little to no governing process and 90% of decisions being made on emotional bias not data it's hard to get anywhere. The executives use the employee base as their own personal tools for whatever suits their fancy that day and have no concern for work life balance or prioritization. This conduct is then reproduced via management through fear mongering at the lower levels resulting in a chaotic mess where everyday is a fire drill.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere's a reason your A-Team talent is going elsewhere and it's not just for better pay. Apache used to be an outstanding company with a rich heritage of doing things differently. Realize that your employees are your greatest asset, ALL OF THEM, and understand that the soft benefits won't carry you forever if you keep beating on them. Wake up!

    Needs improvement

ProsBenefits are decent if you stay long enough for them to vest. Not hesitant to give you work responsibility. You have to put in a lot of hours, but its pretty laid back. Nice offices. I had a very nice boss.

Cons10% of people do 90% of the work. Some people do absolutely nothing and still receive the same bonus as everyone else. Little opportunity for advancement. Hard work not rewarded. You will work extra hours. You will not get the yearly bonus that they tell you to expect in your offer sheet. Small raises (2 or 3%). Very little work life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward your top performers or they will leave! Get rid of the people who do nothing. Promote the people who deserve it. Its 2013, time to give out corporate credit cards and not make people fill out expense reports every time they need to be reimbursed. At the very least automate the process.

    that floor was nuts!

    Pros-Very smart, talented people.
-private offices for most IT staff
-good UNIX and Windows IT, very knowledgeable
    -Steve Ferris is great
-stock plans are hugely amazing great if they ever meet the targets

ConsEmployees were actively encouraged to poke their heads in on anything that could possibly be in their sphere of knowledge, so any sort of activity you did would be constantly interrupted with well-meaning suggestions from every approach.
-lots of legacy employees who were promoted to that position years ago, then failed to pan out as far as technical knowledge leaders
    -constant pressure
-lots of single-point of failure knowledge systems "e.g. Jeff is the only guy who can do that so wait for him to get back to you"
    -very budget-driven
-complete failure to recognize that on-call time is time employees never get back.
-huge 2-terabyte SAP database that they never could get approval to archive
-raises use a bucket system, your supervisor only has a few grand to hand out for everyone.
