Premise: start-up within a large company. Reality: bloat, bureaucracy, lack of focus and leadership

I worked at Apollo Education Group full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Tackling an important market segment: higher ed, jobs, skills. Good people, great location (downtown SF). The product team members were smart and hardworking. There's a huge disconnect between this 'start-up' group and the main organization. And the acquisition and integration of a small (real) startup made the situation more complicated, confusing and disorganized.

    Cons

Weak Senior management. Lots of wasted effort, time, money while they try to get their act together.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting people who haven't proven themselves as managers or leaders

Great place to work a few years ago

I have been working at Apollo Education Group full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Decent pay, great benefits, nice coworkers, the mission of higher education for working adults is a good one

    Cons

I agree with many of the other reviews that a few years ago, it was a great place to work. But then the outsourcing and layoffs started. I saw some smart, hard-working people being "let go", people with mortgages and families to support. Now it's an environment of self preservation and constantly being afraid of being the next to be laid off. Morale is low which tends to zap people's motivation.

In addition, another con is the university's bad reputation. With hard work and motivation, the quality of education is actually pretty good and it is NOT a diploma mill as some say. But, the perception and reputation is bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Job security would be nice and it would improve morale, which would in turn motivate people to do a great job.

Also, work on improving the university's reputation.

    Pros

Culture in team is good. Good 401k, tuition assistance, vacation. For profit with a non profit mission. They really want to help students.

    Cons

Used to be paid by performance but because of HLC now I get the same pay as the lazy guy next to me so no real incentive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure a way to go back to incentivizing good work or your top performers will leave.

I have been working at Apollo Education Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

People were nice, friendly family like atmosphere before the changes. Pay was decent for the area. The cafe was really great, congrats to Aramark for that!

    Cons

Business model is no longer effective. Everyone has an online school now, so no need to go to a third rate school with the cache of a community college, but a price of a brand name school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consultants did a horrible job with the right-sizing and communications. Instead of ripping off the band-aid, they made it a long, lingering process where everyone was unsure and scared all the time. Random cuts with the message "it's not over" hardly fostered the environment for innovation that they will need to survive the long term. They needed a large, deep cut, and then let everyone left know they are safe so they get back to work and feel more secure. The way they did it let all the best talent know that they need to get out asap...

I have been working at Apollo Education Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Nice work environment, great colleagues pretty good benefits. Culture, at least in my department is good. Immeidate managers and directors are really nice people, but there are a lot of prima donnas around.

    Cons

Lack of leadership at the top, constant talk of layoffs, disconnect between top management and what actually gets done. No vision for the future, it seems like they're just trying to manage the stock price and not the company. People who are good are leaving, causing quite a brain drain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the money and leave, bring some new blood to revitalize this listing ship.

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Phoenix, AZ

I have been working at Apollo Education Group full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Decent compensation package - salary, vacation, health benefits, 401k.

    Cons

Lack of sustained focus. Too many changes in leadership that have occurred too quickly. This has lead to numerous changes in corporate direction, multiple re-orgs (just for the sake of re-orgs).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the outsourcing ... do you realize the knowledge you are losing? do you realize the control you are losing? do you realize the quality of work you are losing? See the "Cons" listed above.
