    Had such amazing potential

    Anonymous (Former Employee)

ProsAmazing co-workers and immediate boss who worked tirelessly to build each other up, provide top of the line service and had the courage to do the right thing; good benefit compensation.

ConsPoor top leadership (appointing the incorrect people to key, decision-making positions; misuse of corporate resources, funds and employees; unprofessional behavior of C-level management); company values are only posters on the walls; cronyism is rampant, outsourcing of key customer-facing positions that made this specialty commercial insurance company great was extremely detrimental; all of these things led to a sad corporate culture and was so unnecessary.

Advice to Senior ManagementBoard of Directors and C-level management should be changed where appropriate; exit interviews should be taken seriously; input from non-management employees should be valued instead of snubbed.

Good employer as a smaller company but I enjoyed it less as it grew in size.

    Vice President (Former Employee)

ProsCould be fun to work there at times. If you are a slacker, you can probably blend in without getting fired due to the mediocrity that surrounds you. Salaries were ok. Lots of office locations if one wished to move around.

ConsPoor bonuses. The president of the group can be quite arrogant and is not a real people-person. High expense ratios. Under-performers were not exited out of the company at all. Mr. Watson seems to discourage alternative views and seeks out those who will not disagree with him.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce the focus on becoming the biggest insurance company and reduce the expense ratio.

"Okay'. But they need a lot of help.

    Project Manager (Former Employee)
    San Antonio, TX

ProsA pretty stable place to work. Nice people. Easy to talk to and generally are willing to help you. Good 401k matching.

ConsNo direction for the future. Too much red tape and "culture" is pretty much non-existent. There are no incentives to do better. People just show up everyday and go through the motions.

Advice to Senior ManagementEliminate the stale managers and learn to have fun. Get some new people in the door with fresh ideas and learn to be innovative. People spend too much of their lives at work to not enjoy it.

THE PETER PRINCIPLE STILL RINGS TRUE

    Senior Claims Examiner (Current Employee)
    Peoria, IL

    ProsThey are a growing company.

ConsThey do not promote from within. Almost every management position in the last 3 years have gone to outside personnel, transfers between departments is rarely if ever done. Micromanagement on every issue from top to bottom. Severe under staffing. Implements new procedures without input from staff that will have to utilize new programs to assist in determining if the new program will work or be of benefit. Making promises to new policyholders without determining if the department responsible can realistically complete the work promised. Better to tell the truth than make commitments that cannot later be kept due to under staffing, lack of necessary technology etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet feedback and input from staff. Encourage continuing education as promoted in the company manual but usually is declined by local management. Training for new staff - none - need to be more pro-active and not reactive to possible problems and legitimate concerns in procedures. Pat on the back on occasion for employees who excel and work 60-70 hours a week for no additional pay to keep promises management has made. Instead of just the " no one asked you too" normal response from middle management.

    Clueless CEO

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsTalented, hard working staff and middle management

ConsWorked way too many weekends to meet high expectations, but other departments left a 5:00 every day and were never held to account for consistently dropping the ball. CEO is aloof - between the private jets and the housing allowances, he seems to enjoy spending the shareholders' money on his personal luxury.

This is not a company that values its employees.

    Underwriter (Former Employee)

ProsThere ate some nice people who work for this company. Educational support is also good.

ConsPromotions are not given based on job performance. Bullying goes on unpunished.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart looking at who produces and reward them accordingly.
