    The people are nice and warm. People are willing to help and spend time with you.

    Cons

    - slow and averse of change
    - not aware of latest trend of industry
    - risk of failure supersedes willingness to change

    - bring change agents and give them authority to make changes

    Beer Friday was nice. San Fran is not a far drive from Sunnyvale

    Cons

    Short and simple, Ariba maintains a system and employee culture where they are far too busy putting out fires and far, far, far too busy to consider doing anything at all to prevent them from blazing out of control.

    Pros

    Pay and benefits are decent.

    Cons

    Still feel the pain of working here after bailing out months ago. And its not just for me but a lot of folks who have worked there. You would think that there would be some fond memories. The deterioration started with tagging people as "resources", putting them on a spreadsheet, and allocation them to random projects without any training or ramp up time as a 100% resource. The company should realize that skills are not interchangeable, a good app engineer may not be a good infrastructure engineer or a UI engineer. Let people do the jobs that they are good at and give them choices - it will benefit both the people and the company.

    Cons

    1. The coworkers here the the rudest I've velvet had! No one offers help to new hire
    2. Full of depressed, low caliber coworkers
    3. Manager is incompetent, offer little help to newcomers
    4. The hr people lack professionalism, and the while hr department is dysfunctional.
    5. Extremely low wages
    6. Everyone here are unhappy and look depressed

    Do not come here, it'll be your nightmare!

    Used to have more or less OK salary and some stock, now does not offer any stock, so average

    This is a dump of bugs with bugs on top of bugs, technology is SUPER old, ignorant arrogant managers who have no idea how to lead the company.

    I completely agree that this company looks like a hive of MAS (Mutually Admiring Society) like mentioned in the previous review. HR is absolutely of no use. There is no personal development encouraged, there are no team activities, company activities whatsoever.

    I honestly feel pity for Ariba customers who have to deal with a rotten piece of "cloud" technology and are hooked on this technology. I really wish they had some escape to something more modern and less buggy. There are critical production issues happening almost every 4-5 days and everyone in the company is running around screaming and fixing stuff.

    Bugs can float around unfixed for years, they just bounce from one team to another. I've seen bugs opened in 2011 and still not fixed as of today.

    Architecture (if we can even call it that way) of the Ariba system is super-ancient, it is completely proprietary, no modern technologies are used. Every little modification in the system can cause unexpected behavior; it is not possible to fix something without breaking something else.

    Setup / Configure / Build workflow is EXTREMELY slow and the "learning" curve is so steep that by the end of it you want to curse everyone and everything. During the initial setup you have a feeling that the setup process is overcoming issues instead of setting up the environment. It will take you months before you even understand the process a little.

    Now, let me tell you more about bugs. This company has an enormous number of bugs, the sole activity people do there is fixing bugs. There is no rotation, no exciting development, no new technologies brought in, no innovation happening, it is EVERYDAY BUG FIXING only.

    You are supposed to fix a certain number of bugs per week, if you don't, you will be brainwashed by the management and told repeatedly how important your role is as a Principal or Senior Bug Fixer is and if you excel as a bug fixer maybe they will give you a real development job. Guess what - NEVER. You will be fixing bugs for years like everyone else.

    There is no career growth. How many bugs should one fix to be promoted from one level of "Bug Fixer" to the next ?

    How can one be creative and productive if all he does is fixing bugs every day FOR YEARS.

    Staff turnover in the company is just insane. I have seen many people leaving left and right after couple of year or couple of months of being on board only because they did not want to eventually become Senior Bug Fixers and after some years have nothing to put into their resumes.

    This is a classic example of a company that rots from inside. My thinking is that SAP bought Ariba for their client base, but definitely NOT because of the 19th century "cloud" technology.

    So the moral of this story is - if you want to be yet another mosquito on this swamp - welcome to the club, but if you are an ambitious DEVELOPER, stay away. I only wish I knew what I was signing up for when I joined.

    No advice, it would be useless, I have tried to reason with them for years and it lead to nothing at all. This whole company has to be torn upside down to bring some changes

    Enterprise software is a good domain to learn.
    You can learn a lot if you are given the time.

    Cons

    Management layer above first line managers is bad. They will not admit the mistakes they make and push the blame down. People in power tend to abuse it. It certainly seems to be the case here. Top heavy. Process heavy. Process seems to be the solution to all problems but ends up exacerbating it. No sense of empowerment. Public humiliation in some meetings. Internal demos are a farce. You may develop a good product only to see it publicly nitpicked over some trivial issue. No, its not Apple's culture of excellence if thats what you are thinking. Schedule is king. Beware if you slip. Constant stress and negativity. No work life balance.

    Pros

    Ariba as a whole is a great company. It offers a great PTO package of 20 days, and it's fun to work with such a diverse and global group of colleagues. Ariba, acquired by SAP, is poised for growth and success. I'm confident that with SAP's guidance both companies will reach new heights of innovation.

    Cons

    HR may tell you that everyone starts out at the help-desk, but that's not true. You may also be told that positions open because people get promoted - that's not true. People leave the help-desk because if they don't fit in with the management clique, they are passed up for the opportunities they have worked so hard to earn. Morale is extremely low at the help-desk, and recognition is inconsistent and biased. If one speaks another language other than English as their first language, they are labelled as incompetent. Mothers are unreliable and unteachable. People who have concerns, or offer suggestions for improvement, are dissenter. Labels are unjustly applied by a management that doesn't know more than the employees' first and last names, let alone the quality of work that they do. I have never seen such blatant discrimination in a workplace in the United States. The most counter-productive aspect of working at the help-desk is that the knowledge needed to assist customer is not readily accessible, and the managers are not trained in the sourcing products. If you are considering Ariba, make sure to enter through a different department other than the help-desk.

    There are politics in every workplace, but if Integrity is one of the company's values, then people should be recognized and advance based on the quality of their contributions. Promoting unqualified people and discriminating against workers based on personal assumptions and prejudices is completely unacceptable. The help-desk is the first line of defense and support. If the help-desk is poorly managed, customer relationships will inevitably suffer - and so will growth. Management should be open to ideas, be well-versed in the products and solutions Ariba has to offer, and build working relationships based on communication with employees. Management should also be more proactive in making sure that employees have the tools they need to do their jobs efficiently.

    Pros

    Good salary, nice office environment, decent co-workers. Benefits are OK; while you get 20 days of paid time off, there are no sick days so if you get sick your vacation hours are deducted.

    Cons

    The company suffers from two layers of overhead at the top.

    a. Program managers - most useless people I've ever seen, who have no idea about projects but somehow given the authority to yell at project managers. They also force the company to use an outdated, Excel-based management tool and neglect to look at modern Web Based alternatives.

    b. CTO and architects - same story, these guys are tasked to approve technical decisions without understanding the full details of projects. The end result is meaningless approval process where engineers can't do anything until approval, yet approved items require constant modifications because they overlook tripping blockers at the bottom.

    Pros

    You get to work with talented and smart people.
    Salary offered is competitive.

    Cons

    Laid back approach, few new features/enhancement coming in.
    Good for people who want to retire or end their career here.
    They own a propriety stack which is poorly documented and not much help from peers.
    No opportunities for new joiners and first year you shall be working on fixing bugs, editing csvs, xmls, etc
    Energy level is very low amongst employees.

    You need to motivate your employees, simply giving ppt presentations and talks every quarter doesn't help.

    Great benefits and if you are in with the "in crowd" in HR you're good

    Cons

    The VP of HR signs off and changes all raises and reviews and has 0 professional discussions w/anyone.
    She's too busy shopping online in the morning and talking about hiring good nannies.
    There is NO training or employee development
    Counting myself 5 people left HR in 18 mos and the group size in Pittsburgh is 16 people (33%)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Find people who understand the term "leadership" and people development and hire them. You're overpaying your Sr. Mgmt and getting nothing in return but disgruntled people, high turnover and apathy.
