    Pros

Reverse engineer and learn from code developed by brilliant engineers.

    Cons

Legacy code. When Ariba started, they had high end engineers move from Apple. In the late 90's and early 2000, they created a lot of the things we take for granted today. The OR mapping layer is brilliant. Same with the UI rendering engine AribaWeb. The management has been reducing staff. This means that there is a lot of legacy code that hasn't been maintained. Trying to debug that is a nightmare, you try to problem 1 and create three more problems.

    Advice to Management

    Need more engineers.

    Pros

Ariba has a very rigorous recruitment process and the people hired are top notch. Peers and colleagues will be very helpful and intelligent Weekly beer bash on Fridays Perks and benefits pretty decent by Bay area standard. Flexible on working from home, good for people with family.

    Cons

No innovation. They have a propriety code which is very heavy and interdependent among its modules. No documentation and takes time to learn. Employee morale is very low. They keep on hiring more and more VPs, directors and PMs some of whom are of no good. Some teams have to co-ordinate with India team on daily basis which can get frustrating. Life for Ops team is a hell. Senior management talks big in managerial and technical jargons and delivers less on paper.

    Pros

Learned a lot about huge configuration management issues and a **few** other interesting pickups. Good benefits and vacation.

    Cons

Extremely arrogant management, very click-ish, terrible people skills, poor work life balance, millions of lines of code that is ancient and of little value to your next employer, very old architecture. They are opening a Shanghai development center and heavily staffing their Bangalore development center. You will spend a lot of time talking to them to all hours of the night. You will be assigned to work on bugs for your first year of employment. If you do not excel at this, you will not make the cut and will be let go. Absolutely no documentation and people are so stressed with work, few people will take the time help you out. You are on your own, Pilgrim.

    Advice to Management

Develop and appreciate your people and not just the ones who have been there 10 years and know all the code.

    Pros

Good compensation and benefits - 20 PTO days plus extra holiday in late December. The company is currently doing well, and is therefore a stable place to work.

    Cons

The culture is (inadvertently) hostile to new blood and new ideas. The software stack is proprietary and increasingly out of date, yet new employees are expected to hit the ground running without any training. Development processes and policies are not the most effective, and lead to micro-managing, along with a lack of a true spirit of teamwork. Not a good place for a senior engineer to join, unless you don't mind being an over-paid code monkey.

    Advice to Management

Ariba Engineering has a culture problem, which needs to be addressed sooner or later. Change has to be initiated from the top.

    Pros

Smart people Process oriented (can be a con) Good compensation and benefit, 4 weeks vacation + 1 week Christmas break

    Cons

The company is stuck with 10 year old technology stack with ill-documented proprietary frameworks. What you learn is mostly only applicable to Ariba. Not much interesting stuff is going on. The company is not really innovative. People seem busy but they are not producing much. This is a quite boring place.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to innovate. It's not easy given the budgetary constraints, but as time goes by, the proprietary stuff will only get more out-dated. Company will have hard time attracting and retaining people.

    Pros

Leader in the space. Has made a transition from on-premise to on-demand technology - one of the few companies that has been able to make this jump. Stock price has been jumping.

    Cons

Politics will get you up the ladder, not productivity. The leadership team is thin on the products and technology experience outside of Ariba. Organizational structure is strange and still shows the effects of growing by acquisition with lots of battles among the tribes. Investment in infrastructure has been lacking, and the company is inefficient because of it. Sunnyvale may be the official HQ of Ariba, but everyone knows that Atlanta is the emerging and de facto HQ for Ariba.

    Advice to Management

How about a normal organizational structure? How about resolving the multiple overlapping groups? Oh, and why not share some of those millions that you guys are milking from the company?

    Pros

Good compensation package and in line with other companies in Silicon Valley CA

    Cons

This is high school clicks all over again. While the folks on an individual level were very smart and high performing, as teams they did not play well together, nor did the teams communicate well across all organizational lines. The opportunity here is tremendous - but lack of leadership in this area will get in their way.

    Advice to Management

You need to build of culture of responsibility and team. I enjoyed my short tenure at your company but it was clear to me that as an individual I could only get so much done and the lack of team culture would limit my impact.

    Pros

If you lack alternatives, it really is not an energetic place, you will be looking for something new in a few months, very few people come in to the campus making it very difficult to get acclimated to the culture of the company

    Cons

No excitement, they don't just sell spend management, they live it which makes the environment very spartan, management is all over the country which deflates the energy of the company

    Advice to Management

leave the company and bring in people who are really hungry and and committed to double digit growth
