High pressure, poor work-life balance, upper mgmt priorities skewed by SAP acquisition

    Engineering Manager (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsStrength of the people in general. Pay is good.

ConsUnrealistic dreams, insufficient funding to actually deliver. Many projects have gotten killed as a result.
Really heavy process creates too much friction. Lack of willingness to prioritize and really fix things.
Things now worse with the SAP acquisition. Is quite political.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

Pros- smart and motivated people to work with
    - great support from management on career development
    - ample vacation time

Cons- work long / weekend hours sometimes :(
    - open to hear new ideas for improvement but slow (if at all) to adopt
    - out of date, or lack of adequate documentation on processes in certain areas
    - too many meetings (managers are sometimes hard to catch)

Advice to Senior Management- host more team building activities
    - enforce importance of work-life balance
    - listen to and consider employees ideas and concerns
    - despite your all day meetings, make time for your employees

    Try to keep up

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

Pros. Agile, no BS, get the job done.
    . Smart people.
. People work with you to help unblock issues.
. Spend management product ideal for the economic downturn, so company actually made money.

    Cons. Prepare to work.
. Things are very high paced. If you don't keep up, then you'll end up getting dragged along on the ground .. face down.
. You are just a grunt unless you've been there long enough to be deemed valuable to be promoted.
. Escalations are rampant. Always feeling you are in reactive mode rather than proactive.

Advice to Senior ManagementSlow down and let people catch up. Granted, some people are just too slow and those needs to be dealt with, but everybody needs a breather. You're dragging more people through the dirt with the current pace than you realize.

    An OK place to work

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsLot of smart folks, Stock is going very good. Stable job

ConsThere is no work life balance and not much career growth. Just keep working 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Very poor leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect your employees and don't treat them as robots who can work 24/7. Employees play a big role in Ariba's success so don't hesitate in acknowledging that

Good place to work if you are afraid of long hours in other company

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGreat talent people, and many of them are very senior 10+ years. Good technical (UI) framework to learn. Good compensation and benefit. Great balance between person life and work.

ConsBad executive leadership. They only care about how to suck more money/stock out of the company. Lack of leadership to get more business. Since company is not growing, it helps created politics even within engineering people. Engineers could be fighting for promotion and responsibility.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your workers well with fair promotion and compensation.

Good place to learn, not for career advancement

    Consulting Manager (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsMarket leader, gets people exposed to the cutting edge of Spend Management. In general good peers tend to be very well educated in the field, and contribute significantly to running projects.
Benefits package is outstanding, and salires tend to be a little above average.

ConsCareer advancement was very poor. Remote employees were reporting to managers that changed in average every 9 months during my time there, therefore preventing the creation of a plan that was meaningful.
Internal politics are very close to be unmanageable. Managemen teams in Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Sunnyvale tended to communicate very poorly and created a lot of friction and compromises.
Executive compensation is hugely out-sized. The only quarter in which management forfeited their bonuses, the company was suddenly profitable by a wide margin

Advice to Senior ManagementThe incredible loss of talent that currently affects Ariba is a direct result of internal staffing practices that try to extract maximum performance with little guidance or formal training. My team was top-heavy, meaning a lot of expensive management overhead, and not that many delivery people who could actually deliver the work. The team members were heavily overworked and given additional responsibilities without properly offloading others, with the result that we couldn't deliver the goods without working 70 hours a week.
