Mostly un-knowledgeable employees but with proper training and incentives can be pretty decent

I have been working at Army and Air Force Exchange full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Generally most employees are decent people, as long as you do your job and do it well promotion is fast, the high number of people who don't know what they're doing will make you an asset quickly

    Cons

Clique-ish, employees rumored to be sleeping with bosses, drama queens, lazy people, following procedure to the letter rather than following the spirit of the law, they'll ask you to move to some godawful places

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

the #1 problem with AAFES is the reorder associates and warehouse workers, they rely on ASAP do all the heavy work, are completely unfamiliar with stock, don't order accordingly. Inventory is not managed at all

In MCSS the reorder associates are especially terrible, ZERO understanding of what customers need, ordering way too many items etc etc

I have been working at Army and Air Force Exchange part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You get good hours sometimes, veryyyy laid back environment, impossible to get fired, you also get a raise every year

    Cons

At the place I work the hours usually get cut drastically but not too low to where you could draw partial unemployment, they're really smart, advancement is hard it will take years to become manager and if you start out as an intermittent, achieving part time employment is kind of difficult, they do offer health benefits for part time and full time employees but it is expensive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on better raises, remodeling the buildings

    Pros

Great corporate experience working with military and CEO leadership. Learned how to create ideas to professionally market, while being mentored by a supervisor.

    Cons

Some of the management seemed a little disgruntled at times, and would voice it publicly to interns.

Former Employee - Senior Store Associate Intermittent
Former Employee - Senior Store Associate Intermittent

I worked at Army and Air Force Exchange part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

reward quality workers, friendly people, quick advancement, fun and positive environment

    Cons

Benefits-most positions are intermittent or seasonal so they don't have to pay employee benefits. Tough competition for regular positions that do offer benefits, sometimes procedures are not very cohesive with tasks and some procedures are outdated and take longer than they should. Teams/ Departments are quite divided, no real whole team feeling- only within specified departments. Put senior employee preferences before newer employees. I did not feel valued or important to the company when management told me they could not accommodate my school schedule because a senior employee would only work a certain schedule (it was not that they actually couldn't work any other schedule but that they refused to) I was told "Well, [employee] always works [this schedule] and I can't change it. It just can't work with your schedule" I was also told that if they knew I was going to be attending school I wouldn't have been hired. However I did inform them of my schedule change and when it would change when I went in for my interview.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce intermittent job and increase regular positions. Retention rates would be higher if thetr were more positions that were regular FT and PT vs intermittent. This would make new hires feel more valued and more like you truly believe in the person to be successful at the company, rather than as if they were just settled on to fill a spot. Ensure that all employees are treated fairly and equally when scheduling is involved and try to accommodate all employees not just those with seniority.
