    Pros

Good Benefits, vacation, and health insurance discounts

    Cons

Promotion from within is there, but they will not pay you what you deserve. It is frustrating to watch someone from outside the company get hired and do the same job, and get paid more. They seem to only care about the bottom line, and don't put their neck on the line to keep the good employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Would be nice to see more promotion from within, and pay to match. CSR's would stop jumping ship, if AJG could price match other agencies who are willing to pay for what they get.

    Pros

Free coffee and generally the staff is friendly. Systems pretty good from an administration standpoint..

    Cons

Large company that has grown by many small acquisitions that are not managed as a collective organization. Little chance to succeed against the large international brokers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Nothing. They wouldn't listen anyway.

    Pros

I enjoyed working with talented, hardworking, loyal colleagues dedicated to fulfill Client needs with or without help from Gallagher.

    Cons

Stagnant growth. The need for an advanced degree or knowing the right middle to upper manager for advancement above low level jobs is obvious. Lack of appreciation for hard work employees render by upper management who require mid-level and low-level management to provide incentives to employees at personal expense. Record growth in profitability yields no reward to dedicated employees who sacrificed during lean years. Blatant nepotism, poor almost dangerously low morale and frequent unsuccessful implementation of software and procedures cripple the ability to place business properly and breed resentment amongst employees towards upper management. Mandatory use of Gallagher approved intermediaries improves Gallagher's bottom line at the expense of it's customers. Career Launch and Interns are often Silver Spoon Individuals who are fast tracked into Career Positions often without basic insurance knowledge or needed people skills. Usage of India Service Center to replace American Workers leaves many in constant fear of lay-off. Also, instruction to avoid making the India Service Center known makes this division all the more worrisome for employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read the Gallagher Way and implement it again. You are advertising that Gallagher lives by it but they do not. The dollar is obviously the most important. Shareholders are your true customer now. You are running good, hard working people out en masse. Why??????

    Pros

    Pay was not too bad.

    Cons

Work pressure was high, job satisfaction non existent. No clear career path. Management was getting harder to work for every day and they made up things about you just to justify getting rid of you. You were under constant surveillance so they could ding you on every little thing. Things were changing every day so you made many mistakes trying to adapt day to day. You were ridiculed for others work delays, they could be in a division half way around the world but because your work was dependent on them getting their jobs done you were at fault for not getting your work done. Some coworkers were literally sent back to their desk crying under the abusive pressure. Everyone was afraid to take anytime off.

Good Company, Bad Management, Worse Benefits

Former Employee - Account Manager  in  Itasca, IL
Former Employee - Account Manager in Itasca, IL

    Pros

Lots of resources, still has an entrepreneurial feel, room to grow, stable industry, possible to specialize in many different areas

    Cons

The company does not value its employees. All perks disappeared during the great recession but never reappeared. The benefits are terrible. Health plan is so cheap, retirement plan is a joke (+5 years vesting, company match is not competitve), and PTO time is 10 days for the first 5 years! 10 days! Work-life balance is terrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the benefits program or you'll never attract new talent and this will affect / hurt growth in the future. Maybe decide to actually follow the Gallagher Way you brag about so much. Have any of you read it recently?

    Pros

Attractive and well located local office. Professional staff (mostly) with sincere desire to serve clients despite significant obstacles from local, regional and national management.

    Cons

No pay raise in 6 years! Ineffective and inequitable compensation system. Little or no local training. Local and regional management is ineffective, unengaged with the business and inconsistent. Overbearing corporate oversight. Staff morale extremely low. Very limited career paths for junior staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to establish high standards and stick to them without waffling. Employees need to get reasonable raises based on individual performance. Poor performers bring everyone down and need to be removed. Management needs to have client responsibilities in order to gain creditability with staff and not just sit in their offices issuing edicts..

    Pros

Benefits are great and the company values are sold. The history of AJG stands out amongst other brokerage firms. There are many specialized niches within AJG that allow you to become an industry expert. Great internship program.

    Cons

No recognition of success from managers
Getting a raise is difficult; even with a consistent sales record
There is no encouragement to find employment opportunities within company which leads to high turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate and recognize the younger account executives when they perform. That's your future. AJG spends a lot of money on developing talent but I feel like the majority leave after a few years and go to other companies that provide a more promising future.

    Pros

It is a growing company as they are constantly acquiring small insurance agencies.

    Cons

Corporate management is more interested in form over substance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean up your books. Sometimes it is easier to write-off balances and save money in the long run instead of spending time and effort researching historical items.

    Pros

This would be a good company for a person seeking to get professional experience.

    Cons

If you are very experienced in your field get ready to be under valued, under paid, and yet squeezed for everything they can get out of you. On the one hand they can't do without you. On the other you are told you're worth very little.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up and see who is really do the work and what work adds real value. It's not just producers by a long shot.
