Great company but too many horrible young engineers

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat benefit plans high prestige. Great project a and social activities for all those young graduates. Honestly I can't stand them as they like to form their social circle and ignore the rest.

ConsYou can make it or break it. I've seen many ppl work their butts off but still can't mange to move up. You either good or not. Don't blame your slowness on your skin

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone

    Friendly Working Environment

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIt was an enjoyable place to work and people were very friendly. There is a large variety of projects and you can find yourself with unexpected but interesting opportunities.

ConsThey do not do a very good job of clearly setting forth their expectations for individual employees and the yearly goals set can be highly subjective and ambiguous. Also, when the company hit hard times it started letting people go in ways that just skirted the edge of the law. I am sure that they were entirely legal in how they were carried out but just barely.

Advice to Senior ManagementSet clearly attainable and straightforward goals so employees can see a clear pathway forwards within the company.

    Bureaucratic

    Engineer (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsGood for resume building and move on with life as soon as opportunity arises.

ConsBad for personal life and growth. There is fake sense of work life balance. All the smartness comes from very few individuals who pull off majority of tasks for rest of the politicians or gang members. The gangs go around chest thumping and take credit as "we did this" and talk to upper management outside the office hours at parties. The "we" is acceptable while advertising to the outside world, but when it happens internally, it is called back-stabbing.

The true credit and merit is never given to the individual who accomplished the task, since that individual is busy working with his head in sand on the next big project. Often this person never receives promotion unless he has a god father in the firm. The upper management is so busy affirming their positions in the company because of which they hardly recognize how the work got done. Many of the newbies and introverts work in constant fear of being reprimanded or being out-casted by the gang mentality.

They encourage staff who post on behalf of the firm on FB, LinkedIn and other social media. So there is a general sense of greatness. There is a book by the title "Snakes in Suits" and this firm is perfectly like it.

    Power to the People

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsYou are your best company. Sometimes life gets in the way of work - sometimes work gets in the way of life.

ConsFix what's broken, leave the rest to succeed. There are no right answers only solutions that may in a variety of forms to solve problems.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep asking followed by thinking and you will do just fine.

    So far so good

    Electrical Engineer (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsWe get to work on the highest profile projects in the world, with some of the sharpest people in the industry. Benefits are awesome, from health insurance, time off, 401k, etc. Very diverse and friendly employees.

ConsThe pay is not as high as others. The management expects you to work a lot. The management is aloof it seems most of the time, more concerned with financial performance of the office than performance of the workers. Rarely are poor performers let go, financials have to be really poor to lay people off. Seem to let really good ones go on because they don't care to develop them.

    Stressful

    Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsChallenging and engaging work pushes employees improve technical engineering skills. Very rewarding work once you see a project in construction. The company is large enough to provide engineers with a range of different projects and daily work tasks ranging from conceptual design through construction administration. Multiple jobs all over the US and potential opportunities to travel with enough experience and the right skills

ConsStressful environment and hard deadlines must be accomplished. Expected to work more hours than typically billing out. Promotions and internal advancement within company takes time and employees have to be patient to gain respect from co-workers

Traveling the world - seeing the gold leaf flaking off.

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsThey are all over the world, there is plenty of knowledge sharing between offices and colleagues and a good camaraderie among the lower ranks and a few of the upper echelons.

ConsThey continuously lose good people and tend to retain the average and mediocre people.
The salary, if you're in it for the money this is the wrong place. If you're in it for the recognition, again, maybe not the right place.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook among the offices and ask people what they really feel. There's good practices in many of those places that could be shared elsewhere - not all as social and cultural forms differ.

Consoffice politics and an environment of fear.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn some people skills and live with the ARUP values instead of making people scared so much of the time. You will get better employees. Actually value your employees instead of talking the talk.

Good comp but also too much red tape

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat project low turnover, good benefits and plenty of perks. Pay is horrible to great depending on promotions.

ConsWhy does people that never get in touch with the worker bee determine your worth and rate. They don't even say one word to lower staff the whole year. Then they determine what you review rate is

No. That's not how ts done. And don't be stingy with promotions.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou won't listen so who cares
