I worked at Aspire Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

At my site, the administrators were competent and really cared about the students and teachers. The work environment was professional and I feel like the admin strove to meet the needs of teachers, students, and families. My colleagues were great, too. The school had all the challenges of under-resourced inner-city schools, but I think Aspire is doing a great job. Much better than the public school system where I am. The pay was slightly better than at a public school. The benefits were very good.

    Cons

The same cons as working as a teacher in any public school.

I have been working at Aspire Public Schools part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people you work with are friendly and welcoming. Also, the staff is very dedicated towards helping students achieve success.

    Cons

The kids are very disrespectful and there is not enough support from supervisors to handle difficult behavioral situations. More training needs to be provided.

I worked at Aspire Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Aspire truly cares about finding a way for students to succeed. They will not stop until every student is achieving the same as other students. Their goal is equity, not equality.

    Cons

If you work this job, be sure you are not planning on having a social life. I worked about 14 hours Monday through Friday, and then I worked a full day and a half on weekends. If I did not work on our breaks, I felt like a slacker and would fall behind on planning for my students. Behaviors were also a huge difficulty with this job.

    Advice to Management

Work-life balance is something that would help with teacher retention. Positivity from principals would also improve teacher retention.

    Pros

-great work if attending school at the same time -some great people

    Cons

-lots of backstabbing/untrue policies -watch out for yourself and your job because supervisors are willing to throw you under the bus

I have been working at Aspire Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Students always come first at Aspire. Teachers and administrators do their best to serve the students through consistent feedback all around.

    Cons

Sometimes, the feedback provided on instructional practices and procedures turns into criticism, which can come across as negative, and hardly fosters a feeling of family among the staff. If the staff doesn't feel welcomed into the Aspire family, it can lead to burnout.

I have been working at Aspire Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Opportunities to work with and learn from very dedicated, hard-working, and creative educators - flexibility in curriculum and schedules throughout the day - able to adjust instruction daily based on the needs of students - great families and students - access to great professional development - able to try out many different types of instructional approaches

    Cons

    - long work hours and lots of curriculum writing - often doing the job of a curriculum writer, teacher, and counselor all at once - always changing district expectations - lack of technology in many schools

I have been working at Aspire Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Their intentional education/praxis of equity is second to none! Their teacher training, admin training, and commitment to continuous improvement is superior to any district I have ever worked with.

    Cons

Long hours. Sharpening and honing the Principal Residency program. The lack of diversity in some of the students and staff at some of the schools.

    Advice to Management

Recruit at HBCUs, urban areas, and organization of color

I have been working at Aspire Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

At Aspire, you will work hard with an exception group of people. Leave each knowing that your work is making a positive impact on the lives of ~14,000 students across California and Tennessee! The leaders are committed to finding the right people and supporting their professional growth. From the employee perspective, it's a very family friendly environment offering flexibility to help you find a real work/life balance.

    Cons

You won't get rich by coming to Aspire. Salary is a bit of a challenge.

    Advice to Management

The low salary structure is becoming a bigger problem for attracting and retaining the right candidates.

    Cons

I worked at Aspire Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mix of bright, passionate, intelligent people; solid compensation (particularly for cost of living in Oakland); excellent work/life balance

    Cons

Disconnect between the Home Office and the rest of the schools (and possibly in between schools); vertical mobility is based on restructuring of teams or when others leave Aspire (often depends on luck as well as identifying opportunities on your own)

    Advice to Management

More diversity on the board and senior leadership team; involve more active educators in the process
