I have been working at Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris

    Pros

Stable employment and small company environment allows you to know most employees. The vacation time allowed to include the benefits.

    Cons

The reputation in the local area of the care provided at University Hospital as a uninsured patient hospital which gives it a bad rap.

Excellent working conditions, but inevitable distance from the Academia

I worked at Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris

    Pros

Excellent equipment and working conditions in all labs with constant improvement. Very close connections with the clinic, including physical proximity of some labs to the clinical unit, make it possible to conduct research projects that involve usage of fresh patient samples. There are abundant possibilities of collaboration with labs in the other two biological research institutions (Biocenter / Pharmacenter and FMI) located in Basel. The main campus and other lab locations are pretty central and well connected to public transportation. Social / networking events for the whole hospital personnel are frequent and well organized. Food at the mensa is delicious!

    Cons

There is inevitable degree of isolation from the rest of the scientific community and basic research labs. Almost every lab is working with its own methods on its own topic / clinical area. It is ok, if you are a postdoc, but for a non-MD PhD student or a Master student there might be a missing spirit of Academia as well as fewer opportunities for peer discussions. Basic research conferences and meetings, quite logically, never take place at the hospital. Finally, some lab heads actually work in the clinic and are never in the lab.
