Needs Modernization

Senior Technical Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Assurant full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSomewhat flexible hours in professional roles. Good retirement savings plans with high limits.

ConsNo training. Antiquated hardware and software. Still on XP desktops in 2014. Office is typical old tall cubicles, very minimal windows. Limited access to management, who are typically in different offices.

Advice to Senior ManagementMediocre staff OK with mediocre opportunities are happy to remain. Excellent staff find excellent opportunities, unfortunately those are often elsewhere.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Frustrating - Possibilities exist, but.....

Leader (Current Employee)

I have been working at Assurant full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThere are a number of wonderful things about Assurant. People work hard and care a great deal about what they deliver. They are often willing to work long hours to get things done. In general, the value of common decency and common sense are up held.

ConsPeople want to do the right thing and contribute, however, poor decision making frameworks and internal processes don't enable people. It can take a LONG time to get decisions made, especcially when working across all lines of business. Highly matrixed organization w little to /no clear ownership of key business decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are times when consensus is not the answer. Senior Leaders should be willing to take ownership of key decisions even when not all are in agreement - espeicially if it is important to the long term health of the company,

Unstable work environment with changing management and team members. Typical office job.

Loss Draft Specialist (Current Employee)
Duluth, GA

I have been working at Assurant full-time for less than a year

ProsBusiness casual dress with easy work tasks. Get to listen to music while working. Possibility of moving to other branches of the company.

ConsUnprofessional management; if you want to move up you have to participate in brown nosing. Unorganized processes, illogical production tracking, disastrous internal organizational communication.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit being so greedy and focus on efficiency. Higher pay will result in better employees/performance. Reward people based on their performance instead of tenure. Picking favorites based on personal emotional gratification is counter productive to creating a competitive and profitable business.

Going downhill, one benefit at a time

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Woodbury, MN

I have been working at Assurant full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFree parking. Still get an annual bonus, but for how much longer? Nice park-like campus with outdoor walking trail.

ConsNew IT positions are created for chosen people, that are never posted on the internal job opportunities site. Job openings that *are* posted on the site are "no longer available" the same day they are posted! Meanwhile, a phantom position is created that is never filled.

Benefits used to be better, but they whittle away at them one at a time. Lost the 50% gym membership subsidy a couple years ago, and there are no onsite exercise facilities at my location.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you're going to tell your employees to think outside the box, or be willing to change and adapt, you need to do the same! If a subordinate brings up an issue, don't automatically blow them off. Try to understand where they're coming from (it's not OK to say, "I understand. but" and then completely negate what the person is telling you).

Overall Good Company

Project Manager (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I worked at Assurant full-time for more than 8 years

ProsIt is a friendly and peaceful environment among co-workers. The company often has social events for the employees, which is a great opportunity to network with others.

ConsThe management staff is not actively involved with day-to-day operations as much as they should be involved. The compensation is not comparable with the work expectations.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease be more involved with your employees and day to day operations.

pleasant experience

Customer Service Specialist II (Current Employee)
Duluth, GA

I have been working at Assurant full-time for more than a year

Prosgreat benefits, great coworkers, great work hours, the environment is of family culture & team unity depending on the team you are employed with.

Conssalary is not enough for the amount of work that is requested, lunch break is only 30 minutes, management is not needed & they tend to micro manage along with the team lead difficult to make lateral move to a different position. Everything you do is measured. The softwarewe use never works and we have to constantly find other ways to get the job completed.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease the lunch time given and the pay. Care more about the employees to give them up to date "working" resources to actually do their job its the 21st century let's use email.

It use to be a great company to work for, but now you're just a #.

Manager Position (Former Employee)
Miami, FL

I worked at Assurant full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThey use to care about your development. I worked there for several years & moved up the ranks. Some departments still offer that real opportunity for growth.

Great company benefits. Company is always evolving, diversifying product lines, or reinventing itself.

ConsLots of layoffs during the last few years, but they keep it from the news by doing them dept by dept, so it doesn't look like a massive layoff. New management doesn't care about employees, it's all about the business and keeping stock #'s up. No work/life balance, it's all about doing more with less people.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you ask employees for input, really keep an open mind & keep it confidential. It seems when you open up to management with real issues, they later use that info against you.
