    HR Culture at ATC

Human Resources Generalist (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsIntelligent, fun (yet professional HR), hard working HR department. Employees are really motivated and love working at ATC. The culture is really lively and embraces change and innovation.

ConsExecutive leadership micro manages down to all levels and needs to improve delegation and empowerment. High turnover in the HR department due to poor leadership. Even the most motivate and intelligent HR members can not sustain the pace of change which often requires an average of 60-70 hours/week. Since I left there are only 2 of the original HR team members still on the team of 20

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower your directors and managers so you can focus on the strategic initiatives of the future.

    Good Benefits and Pay

Manager Information Security (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsGood benefits and pay. Most of the employees are pleasant to work wtih and intelligent.

ConsIT leadership politics are at times unprofessional rather than those of a professional work environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider improving work/life balance for IT employees. Telecommuting options should be implemented rather than shunned.

    The culture has changed

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsWell compensated, more to sell as company has grown through acquisition

ConsWas a sales through service model, now sell, sell, sell and see what sticks. More micromanagement in last year

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on getting the car shoppers more engaged by upgrading the website, an engaged shopper = happy dealer clients follow company values, not just lip service.

good before the red tape kicked in

Customer Service (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsPeople are dedicated to making the customers grow their business

ConsToo many managers to effectively get things done. As it matured there are more and more hurdles of red tape with lack of innovation

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember where you came from ... turn on a dime not like the huge ocean liner that takes weeks to get approvals

Great place to work depending on what department you are in

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsGreat building, awesome gym, cool co-workers, good location and decent pay.

ConsConstant change to the point where you never know what the next month will bring. A lot of managers don't understand what their employees do so they a poor representatives when change is coming down the pipeline. It's all about who you know, not necessarily how well you perform.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange up the hiring process. We have hired some major idiots for management positions. Obviously we're not asking the right interview questions.

    Glacially slow to change

Senior Manager (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsGood benefits, good salary and benefits, lots of training opportunities

ConsDespite being a dot com, the pace of change is not what you'd expect. Re-orgs were the answer to communication and collaboration problems, rather than outlining clear strategies. Chip, the CEO, is a nice guy, but he's in the weeds on things and nobody who stands up to him lasts long.

Advice to Senior ManagementChip - get some people in upper management who are willing to tell you the unvarnished truth and be open to it. Too many of your direct reports are incapable or unwilling to disagree with you.

Good growth company. Less sincere focus on employees.

    Director (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

    ProsStrong growth, opportunity to learn.

    ConsReorganizes often quickly displacing employees.

Well compensated , too much red tape

IT Manager (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

Prosgreat compensation, company parties, company perks, work at home days

ConsSo much red tape it takes 6 months to make the simplest code or product change. Middle management is not empowered to make any decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower leaders, cut out the red tape, be innovative. You've had the same ugly home page and search process for 10 years. Yes it works but it could be better.

Top of the industry and outstanding company, but not for everyone.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA

Pros• Fast growing with existing advancements each year.
    • Plenty of growth opportunity is most departments.
    • Employee feedback matters.
    • Plenty of industry and job related in-house courses and advancement programs.
    • Most executives are accessible, involved and pleasant.
    • The company is still new to being "BIG", so the family atmosphere is still there.
    • Amazing benefits.
    • Company loves and encourages "shadowing" and mentorships for career progressions.

Cons• Many of the "needed" internal technical changes take years to launch.
    • Communication across departments is mediocre, so emergency/reactive solutions are abundant.
    • While the higher levels of leadership are of very high quality, middle and lower leadership often lack general and technical knowledge of the "trades" their managing. This problem leaves unaddressed opportunities a struggle to pursue and constant distractions from ego conflicts.

Advice to Senior ManagementWithin the technical departments (such as IT, Design, CMS teams), employ and promote individuals that have high knowledge and interest in the respective trades. For those who are currently managing technical groups, without knowledge of said trades, provide and require them to learn more about these industries outside of AutoTrader.com through external courses and seminars. If needed, bring in an outside consultant that knows more about these industries to help [you] gain more clarity for potential candidates. The work of the team will suffer if the leader is without experience and passion for the subject matter.
