    Pros

    People tends to fall into a number of camps... those who've been here years; Those who've joined by acquisition and the remainder new hires. Needless to say those who've been here years fit like a glove... those by acquisition who then leave hate it and those who stay put up with it. New hires either love or hate it mainly dictated by age (not always but in the main).

    Cons

    run on a tight budget and objectives (which is not a con) but the way its achieved is like boot camp in winter! OK if you're obsessive but stay away if not!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Loosen up and fly a little higher and share the profits a bit more with whole company instead of "stars"!!! Could do with more communications and less instructions

    Pros

    Autonomy is the leader in the enterprise search market, especially after acquiring its biggest competitor Verity. The culture of the company is very sales-driven. They are more interested in selling software than selling services- which is great! They want to go forward and expand their partner model in Microsoft-fashion. If they can build a service community that depends on the company's continued success it will drive market-share and the company's presence will expand organically. Their technical force is divided from their sales-force, which is not the norm in pre-sales. What it does allow for is greater dynamic asset allocation, which means when a pending deal needs an injection of talent or manpower it is more readily available than in a company that has its tech resources tethered to specific sales-people or regions.

    Cons

    There are high demands on your time. High-pressure as the quarter comes to a close. Their client support has gotten better and could improve even more. They can do more to improve their brand. Autonomy is not a household name but that is mainly because the average household has nothing to do with "enterprise search"! However if they devote development time to more public-facing projects (a good example is Blinx, which is IDOL-driven) they can become a part of the general public's consciousness- and that can only lead to greater success.

    Make the bonus structure more transparent.

    Pros

    Autonomy is a fast paced company so caters to road warriors. They generally pull younger people out of college for their technical positions as these require being at customer sites weeks and months at a time. Other positions such as sales still require at least 50% travel. They do pay well so the work hard get paid well component is in place. If you are a person who enjoys different types of challenges on a consistent basis then this would be a good place to work for. They offer many different solutions and are always open to having their employees find a niche with a particular product.

    Cons

    If you don't like to travel probably not the company for you. Travel for sales, technical, and marketing on a consistent basis. No matching 401K (not that it matter much nowadays!). There tends to be some lack of communication between upper management and their workers. There really isn't a solid "chain of command" where reservations and issues are easily resolved. Things tend to fall in a black hole so a problem you identify more often than not becomes "your problem". Most of executive team in the UK are very successful but not overly willing to get input from everyday employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I think overall their strategy is very successful (take a look at their stock on the London stock exchange). That being said I think they leave money on the table through lack of training and need to listen to their employees to make the work environment a little bit better.

    Pros

    I get to work wit one of the hottest technologies available out there today. The core products are successful, thus the company is doing comparatively well in this economy. Furthermore the company has a lot of growth potential, eventually

    Cons

    Due to the recent and some of the ongoing acquisitions, the company is quite decentralized. There are too many departments, and even more sub-departments under them. It is hard to figure out who is responsible for what. This eventually affects your job responsibilities, which are usually quite flexible.

    Management needs to give more feedback back to the employees.

    Pros

    Seemingly stable company, good benefits, and competitive pay. If you can work autonomously (no pun intended) with little input from management, you may do well.

    Cons

    Lots of turnover leads to spinning one's wheels, and lack of direction from management. Management can be very short sighted. Mike Lynch likes to have his hands in every aspect of the company, and can be very difficult and stubborn to deal with. There are no employee reviews, so forget about any kind of yearly salary adjustments. Alternative employee compensation (bonuses, stock options, etc) are also long gone. Open floor plans (no cubicle walls) makes for a very noisy and distracting work environment.

    Organizational committment to addressing any and all technical defects with the product
    Growing company with lots of potential
    Aggressive management who are committed to financial success

    Cons

    Customer experience is sacrificed as the cost of getting product out the door.
    Very engineering oriented company, harder for non-engineers to be recognized/respected.

    The company's reputation is questioned everyday as incomplete product offerings are released to the market. Need to fix this.

    Great culture in the office. Meg Whitman is a fantastic and visionary CEO.
