    Pros

Highly committed to being the very best. Tremendous amount of effort and resources are dedicated to understanding our markets and what our residents want / need.

Great working environment with an emphasis on respect and genuine caring for one another.

If you're a self motivated hard worker the opportunities are endless.

    Cons

The work load can be overwhelming at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The intermission program after 15 years of service is an awesome perk.

I have been working at AvalonBay full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I work at the Corporate Office and we have about 270 Associates. Everyone is friendly and there is such a wide variety of people with different backgrounds, which always makes for interesting lunchroom conversations! Associates from different departments are willing to help out, even if you are asking form something outside of their normal scope.

    Cons

Upward growth for women is somewhat lacking and even sometimes discouraged and not supported, especially for working mothers. Although we are constantly told we are paid above industry standard, it is not the case for all positions. We generally have good time off policies, although there is no materniry leave available.

I worked at AvalonBay full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    compensation
    office/company culture
    room to grow

I enjoyed what I did as far as interacting with residents & doing whatever I could to make sure they were happy and had a good experience living at the community. The quarterly events were fun and it was a good opportunity to meet colleagues at other community & really feel like one big team. I learned a lot about customer service in this position and felt motivated.

    Cons

    work-life balance
    ridiculous dress code

Having to work every weekend at a lease up & every Saturday at a stabilized community is difficult. Really limits your ability to be a normal person & spend time with your family & friends. The dress code changes were ridiculous and the necessity to move to different communities is a bit daunting - hard to really feel comfortable anywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Someone is going to lease with me whether I'm wearing a black dress or a pink dress. As long as I look professional, it shouldn't matter what color I'm wearing. If women have to wear a jacket, men should too. A woman in a cardigan & blouse is the same as a man in a shirt & tie. If you're going to be that strict, provide uniforms.

I have been working at AvalonBay full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Love my job. Company has been very good to its associates in the past. My director is very engaged and a true mentor. Fellow associates are very good at their jobs and make coming to work worthwhile. Pay is competitive.

    Cons

Real change in management with the Archstone acquisition. Seems like upper mangement that joined last year cares less about associates. Very unfriendly and dismissive. Many former Archstone associates I have had dealt with have a holier than though attitude and refuse to be a part of the company. They would rather just change everything here to how they used to do things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change is good and natural but some changes are causing disgruntled associates and poor business decisions. Company should pulse check associates more frequently to stay ahead of associate issues and unhappiness. My VP is extremely unfriendly and seems to surround herself with "yes" men.

    Pros

This Company is one of the best companies I have worked for on many fronts they emphasize or have...

    Employee Development
A balanced approach to work and life
Good Benefits Package including stock options
They hire good people to work with and for.

(Not a pro or con, pay is about average for the industry.)

    Cons

The only con I experienced would be the worst bonus structure of any company I have worked for in the industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the bonus program, if there was opportunity to make 10-20% of your annual pay in bonuses it would have enticed me to stay over moving my family out of state for a differing opportunity for my wife.

I have been working at AvalonBay full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

-The people & culture here are awesome. Its great to work in an environment where you genuinely like the people you work with. Everyone is extremely hardworking and always willing to lend a helping hand. The supervisors are very focused on job growth and getting you where you need to be to move up in your position.
-There are lots of opportunities to try new things and explore different facets of the company which always keeps things interesting.
-There is a lot of promoting from within which is encouraging to see.
-My supervisors aren't super strict when it comes to an exact time to be in every day as long as I'm getting my work done and not missing meetings. Our office is pretty relaxed but still gets things done. Everyone is very flexible with taking time off, taking off for a bit during the day for personal reasons, etc.
-I always look forward to coming to work. My job here challenges me and is always making me push forward which I find very valuable.
-The vacation time policy is pretty good. 2 weeks starting out and then after 4 years it goes to 3 weeks and then there are more days as your tenure increases from there.
-The corporate offices have all been pretty dated and they have recently been moving and upgrading all of the offices. It may not seem like much - but its nice to come in to a shiny new office instead of one stuck in the 90s.
-The rent discount is pretty good (20% off market) if you want to live at a community. And most of our community are pretty awesome (new or recently renovated) so that is a huge bonus.

    Cons

-Technology - people still use Lotus Notes? But after a week you are used to it. They have released new tools like Chatter (almost like a Twitter just for the company) which is new and exciting and our virtual magazine is cool.
-Avalon doesn't pay super well - and its something they don't seem afraid to tell people. When you have your review and they tell you they don't give raises (base raise) based on the cost of living and if you live at a community they are most likely raising your rent more than you are getting in a raise - something doesn't add up there...Its really about finding the right balance between enjoying where you work, having a flexible schedule and opportunity for growth. Another company may pay more, but you may not find the same culture there that you have here. Hourly corporate associates are pretty much the only people in the company that aren't eligible for bonuses which is frustrating for many people. However, the fact that they tend to promote from within and really value their associates offsets some of these frustrations and makes you work harder towards getting to that next level.
-The maternity leave policy isn't awesome - 6 weeks and they force you to use all of your vacation days...but if you can afford to take more time off, it seems they are very open to that and will work with you.

I have been working at AvalonBay full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

AvalonBay has one of the beat "team" mentalities of any company I have worked for. Everyone truly works for the benefit of our customers, company, and co-workers. With the amount of company growth and expansion, there are always avenues and opportunities for advancement and exploring new positions if so desired. My co-workers are some of the most knowledgable minds and fun people to work with. The work load, challenges and demands on your skills are high, which keeps things exciting and interesting.

    Cons

Pay rates are lower than comparitive jobs in other companies. Communication between different facets of the company could be improved.
