Pros- If you like to get to know banking systems Avaloq is a good company.

Cons- Avaloq wants to improve the sales, not the product. If there are changes and updates in the product, it is to increase the sales, catch up with the market, or to go where market’s money is, not to make a better product for the sake of customers or just to have the commitment of delivering a solid product.

    - I only worked in CSI, so I can only talk about CSI: There is no proper career path. There are MBOs to evaluate the promotions. But the MBOs are done very vaguely with a lot of political stories affecting the employer’s performance.

    - The bonus I was promised when I signed the contract, never happened. The first year I joined avaloq they laid off 20% of employees (so 0% bonus), next year there was 50% bonus, and the next year there was even less than 50% bonus,…

    - Again only about CSI department: I could not look up to the seniors. I did not want to become like them. Because the team heads and the level C management were lacking a lot of technical and managerial skills. What they were strong at was knowing the right people and having the right relation with those right people. Performance and knowledge comes after political and strategic friendships.

    - Overall Avaloq software is pretty old school and more of a patched up hack: PL/SQL, Excel sheets, VBAs, macros, than a proper software, is more of a “GUI on top of a database”. It is hard to call a product a “software” when there is no productive debugger. Or when we still generate PL/SQL code using VBA code from Excel sheets.

    more illusion than reality

IT Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Zürich (Switzerland)

Pros- Smart people working to deliver a first class banking solution.
    - coffee and mineral water for free
    - benefits at a higher level
    - Gipfeli Friday

Cons- arrogant people (e.g. 2 letter abbr.)
    - lack of soft skills of some co-workers (aggressive behaviour)
    - management by objectives leads to selfish occurrence (happened mostly end of the year)
    - growth was too fast too big
    - lots of organisational changes (C-Level is insecure)
    - mass dismissal in january 2012 after buying B-Source in 2011
    - "we all are equal, but some of us are more equal than others"
    - low chances for job changes
    - perks: only standard (no choices for upgrades)
    - Information hiding / keeping for themselves

Advice to Senior Management- intermediate management positions with internal workers is not always a good choice (lack of soft skills)
    - intermediate management needs more authorization
    - people manager are not really managing "people" because they are always on the road
    - look for a CEO who is able to bring the company to an IPO

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Great team!

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Zürich (Switzerland)

ProsEven though PL/SQL development might seem very "low level" you get in touch with many many (many) different "source types", technologies, "workflow-driven" development and a huge business know-how throughout the company!

ConsThe following is very personal and might not be representative: since the "re-organisation" our team fell into pieces and our domain became just "a little dot in the sales pipeline".

Advice to Senior ManagementLess formal paperwork, pro-active development of the product.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

ProsInnovative interesting technology work, good workers and good working environment

ConsMajor lack of communicative skills of intermediate management.

Advice to Senior ManagementIntermediate Management has to be selected more carefully and only senior and with proven leadership skills.
