I have been working at Avanade (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Compensation seems fair, the benefits are pretty good Really nice people Exposure to a variety of new things

    Cons

Always serving three masters (Avanade, Accenture, and your VP) Waste money on fancy meetings instead of investing in the business Slow to make decisions and take action Ineffective and inept middle management Fiefdoms are prominent Easy to get pigeon-holed

I have been working at Avanade full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay appears to be competitive, sizable yearly stipend for technology, health benefits and vacation, strong support for earning technical certifications. Good place to cultivate soft skills.

    Cons

Travel is a non-negotiable requirement for most workforces in the company, but if you're lucky or in the right market, you may be able to stay local. Work/life balance shrinks as you ascend the company ladder. We are often subcontracted through Accenture, whose company culture tends to be dog-eat-dog and ignorant to the realities of driving technology change. But as far as I am aware, that's what consulting is generally like. For me, rather, the biggest con is that as the business grows, the more employees are expected to fit cookie-cutter, Type A roles. There's a strong emphasis on sales required to advance your career. In fact, you likely will not advance to higher levels unless you can demonstrate your ability to generate new revenue. This isn't an expectation until the manager level, fortunately, but this also means you're going to be level-capped unless you're ready to play the game. In my opinion we lose a lot of talented, technically-minded, albeit sales-averse people this way. Once they know their options are limited, they look elsewhere for work. Frankly, I'm only writing this review because that's where I find myself in this company, too. I like technology; I like problem-solving. But if I want to advance here, I have to be willing to sacrifice more of my work/life balance, reduce my technical emphasis, and drive that bottom line. This is a great place to get started in an IT career--but if you're genuinely interested in staying focused on technology, you may find that this job comes with an expiration date.

    Advice to Management

The trailblazing spirit that defined this company when Mitch Hill founded it is all but gone. Ask yourself: are we our own unique company, or are we a subsidiary of Accenture?

    Pros

I worked with some really great people. Great training opportunities.

    Cons

Expect to work 50+ hours a week as a base not including travel time. Once all is said and done, this job will be your life. If you're early in your career and want to be immersed in your career this is a great job for you. If you are experienced and want to grow in other areas of your life, this job is not for you. I've also seen relationships and marriages severely strained by the demands of projects and travel.

    Advice to Management

There really isn't much I can say. The business model seems to be to cram mid level developers with tons of experience until they start to burn out and move on. That's

    Pros

Great people, great benefits, terrific flexibility, good compensation.

    Cons

Consultants in the field get burnt out. Too much emphasis on parent company and doing it "their" way which results in bottlenecks. Rules and processes do not apply to executives.

    Advice to Management

Avanade really needs to ensure that all levels of the org follow policies and procedures.

    Pros

There are she really great people and supportive team members at this company. Work/life balance is taken seriously. The opportunity ti work on global efforts can help your career growth.

    Cons

Management should see to it that everyone is assigned to a project, instead of allowing assignment of the same people to projects. Make sure team resources are supported before a resource is abruptly removed from a project.

    Advice to Management

See Cons to spread project assignments around so that all consultants get opportunities and support team member corrective actions to reduce rate of removal from projects.
