Unstable company with declining finances

Director (Current Employee)
Basking Ridge, NJ

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than a year

Prosable to work from home if needed

ConsNew Sr Management does not communicate to the organization, constant change with unclear directions, need to get projects done with out adequate staff and expertise, layoffs every quarter and no bonuses paid/no raises. Lots of people have left recently for better opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate with the employees. When a new Sr Leader comes in he should hold departmental meetings with clear vision and continue to communicate with employees

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

All work, No Reward, No Balance

Program Manager (Current Employee)
Washington, DC

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than 3 years

ProsA Pay Check and benefits

Cons12 hour days are the norm and expected, 16 hour days are not uncommon. I am all for doing what ever it takes to get the job done however, when the stretch objective drives you 16 hours a day at Avaya that becomes the new norm. The average new comer stays at Avaya 2 years and then leaves after they burn out. I have been in an OPs review where a presentation was made to hire additional staff, the VP decision maker made the statement "NO, burn them out if you have to, then get rid of them and hire someone else"

Advice to Senior ManagementRather than laying people off you should shift resources to where people are over worked and burning out.

Many changes impacting employees and customers

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat people and technology, excellent customer base, reasonable flexibility for work at home options; a track record of successfully implementing complex solutions

ConsMany changes due to management shifts and Private Equity ownership has created disruption for employees and customers which is negatively impacting loyalty to the brand

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more to customers, front-line employees and management

Avaya is a sinking ship

Manager (Current Employee)
Santa Clara, CA

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than a year

Pros1. Good work life balance. No Stress.
2. Compensation is market competitive given it operates in a stagnant industry
3. The SVPs are industry stalwarts , but they have not been able to recreate the past magic.

Cons1. Who you know in the company is more important than what you know.
2. Senior Manager to Senior Director level is clueless and staying back because they cant find a job elsewhere.
3. The India operations is incredibly low quality. The focus is on cost rather than quality.
4. Non revenue making groups have bloated capacity - eg NMS

Advice to Senior Management1. Improve per employee productivity.
2. Fire all Nortel/Avaya Manager/Director/VP who have been in the company for more than 5 years. They are responsible for running this company aground. Please show accountability.

Green grass

Senior Manager (Former Employee)
Basking Ridge, NJ

I worked at Avaya full-time for less than a year

ProsGood salaries, benefits and work equipment.

ConsBrain-drain has left the company running on empty. Outsourcing appears to be the only approach taken by VP level management. Same old AT&T politics.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdopt modern, more flexible, project management methods, improve project planning and internal client management. Build a competent team of employees to help retain knowledge in-house. Above all, upper management must stop being so risk averse and avoid taking the easy way out with outsourcing agreements for nearly every stage of the projects.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Unsure Future - how long will current environment continue?

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Westminster, CO

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe work was good
technology - chance to work in a high tech environment
good people to work with - I feel sorry for us having to go through what we're going through

Cons-low moral
-constant budget cuts - unable to even afford basic office supplies
-accelerating job cuts
-The LBO = bad investment decision - telecomm has never been a high margin business, why load a ton a debt on a telecomm company and expect to make a good return
- Followed a bad investment (LBO) with a 2nd bad investment with purchase of Nortel. Really? What were they thinking.

Advice to Senior Managementjob cuts need to start at the top, not the bottom

Avaya offers opportunites but approach with caution

Director (Current Employee)

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than 10 years

ProsPeople are extremely dedicated. Plenty of opportunity for transformation.

ConsDifficulty in growing top line results in continuous budget reductions to achieve bottom line financial targets.

Little experience left at the company

Systems Engineer (Former Employee)
Westminster, CO

I worked at Avaya full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood salary and benefits. A few good people left but the layoffs will get them too.

ConsThere have been massive layoffs and two enhanced separation packages. The target is staff with 20+ years of experience. The goal for the company is to get rid of staff with many years and replace them with staff in India. The company gets someone in India for about 25% of the US wages. Problem with this approach is that you can't replace experience. Now the work takes 4 times longer and is of less quality but the number crunchers like to see the employee expenses go down. Meanwhile there are about 100 VPs and countless executives still making the big bucks. I say get rid of Kennedy and all the execs and replace them with staff in India. Instead of paying Kennedy the millions in salary get someone in India for 25k. They can do just as good as least according to the logic of layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis used to be a good company. Cut your salary and get rid of 70% of the execs.

senior software engineer

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Avaya full-time

ProsProcess driven
Umpteen learning opportunities and new products
relaxed work atmosphere.

Cons)- Inefficient managers who doesnt understand people management and why people is important.
- All is well and great except except when it comes to salary and promotion eventhough you have demonstarted excellence, Everything is at the discretion .of manager.
- Not a people driven company anymore.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease appoint sensible managers who are not just qualified. They fail miserably when tackling difficult situations. Realize who has the true potential and retain top talent . Relative rating system is becoming more political and solely at the discretion of managers who isnt able to justify.
