Overall a great 20+ yr career in telecom software engineering

Software Engineer III (Current Employee) Westminster, CO

ProsSome great projects to work on, lots of interesting technical challenges.
    Excellent salaries in general.
Lots of great people to work with, both technically and socially.
Management is working to stay a market leader in their core telecom specialties with
the purchase of Nortel and recently Radvision and trying to introduce new technologies when possible.

ConsAvaya has been constantly downsizing/rightsizing since they were spun off from Lucent.
Lots of outsourcing and off-shoring and that still continues through the end of 2012 when
    I was finally rightsized out.
Avaya has done very little hiring at all since it was born.
So the workforce is aging but, interestingly, still staying fairly up-to-date technically.
Some projects are so large that it's difficult to use newer technologies and methods.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep working to introduce new technologies when possible.

Great teams but poor leadership in executive positions

Software Engineer III (Former Employee) Westminster, CO

ProsThe teams are great. Lots of friendly, helpful people. Day-to-day work is awesome. A good balance of work to life as well. Excellent performance is rewarded.

ConsThere is poor leadership from top level executives. It doesn't seem like there is a clear plan. Companies are acquired and then slowly their products are discontinued. There have been many layoffs recently.
